Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct-9, 1917.
i Applicationled April 13,1916, Serial No. 90,846. Renewed August 27, 1917. Serial No. 188,493.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it. known that I, CALVIN B. PATCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenellyn, in the count State of Illinois, have invented a certain Improvement in Keyless Yokes, of which the followingy is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
` This invention relates to improvements in keyless yokes.
The object of the invention is to provide a draw-bar and yoke connection for draft riggings so arranged thatl the draw-bar may be disconnected from the yoke without taking doyvn the yoke or disturbing the ear. g Another object of the invention is to provide a draw-bar and yoke connection of the type above indicated which avoids the use of coupler keys, and thereby permits the employment of all standard draw-bars whether the same have coupler key slots or not.
In lthe drawing forming a part of this specication, Figure 1 is a part vertical section, part side elevation of a draw-bar and yoke showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 2*2 of Fig. 1, the draw-bar being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a front end elevation of the improved yoke. And Figs. f1 and 5 are perspective views of one of the locking blocks andspreader respectively.
. In said drawing, 10 denotes a standard draw-bar having upper shoulder 11 and lower shoulder 12. The yoke A is preferably made in the form of a steel casting and comprises an upper arm 13, lower arm 14, rear connecting piece 15, and an integral, hollow, rectangular hood at its forward end. The hood has an upper wall 16,
and bottom wall 18. The
side walls 17-17 0 provided with an lntegral,
upper wall 16 is depending shoulder or gib 19 which coperates with the upper shoulder 11 of the drawbar. The ybottom wall 18 of the hood is oiset downwardly from the lower arm 14 a distance corresponding to the depth of the gib 19 so as to permit the draw-bar Vbutt to be loweredsuiiiciently to` clear said gib when the draw-bar is removed, as hereinafter described. The lower wall 18 is provided with a longitudinally extendin centrally loof Dupage and cated slot 20 for the purpose hereinafter described. -To detachably lock the draw-bar and yoke together, I provide two locking blocks. B`B which are made right and left. Each block B comprises a iiat plate portion 21 and an upwardly extended shoulder 22 at its front end. Each block B is also bev'- eled along its inner edge as indicated at 23 to cooperate with the correspondingly bev-y eled upper portion 24 of a spreader retain# ing block C. The latter has a downwardly- The'parts `are shown in the drawings in lassembled'positionand in order to disconnect the draw-bar, the cotters 27 are first removed whereupon the spreader C is removed from below. Each of the blocks B may be then shifted laterally toward the center of the hood a sufficient distance to clear the corresponding shoulder or abutment 28 whereupon the blocks B- may be withdrawn forwardly through the open end of the hood. As soon as the blocks B are removed, the draw-bar butt can be -lowered to clear the gib 19 and then withdrawn, as will be understood. It is believed the method of assembling the parts will be fully understood from the foregoing description.
I claim: 1
1. A cast yoke for railway draft riggings, said yoke having a hood at its forward end provided with means for engagingthe top shoulder of a draw-bar, and detachable devices adapted' to lock the yoke with the lower shoulder of a draw-bar, said devices including three members, two of which are shouldered and linsertible and removable from the front end vof the hood and the third insertible and removable from below through shoulder of a draw-bar, and detachable de vices adapted to lock the yoke-with the lower shoulder of a draw-bar, said. devices including three members, two of which are shouldered and insertible and removable from the front end of the hood and the third insertible from below through a slot in the bottorn` of the hood, said third inember being in the form of a spreader and adapted to be positioned between said two shouldered members to thereby nfL-'aintain the latter in proper position.
3.5 A. yoke for railway draft riggings hay ing a hood'at its forward end, said hood being provided with a transversely extending integral gib arranged .to engage the upper shoulder of a draw-bar butt, the
lower wall of said hood having a slot therein, a pair of shouldered blocks insertible from the front end of said hood, the shoulders of said blocks being adapted to engage the lower shoulder of a draw-bar butt, and a spreader member insertible through said slot and arranged to have the upper portion neeaeer thereof iit between said shouldered blocks, the engaging faces of said blocks and spreader member being beveled.
fl. A yoke for railway draft riggings having a hood at its forward end, said hood being provided. with a transversely extending, integral gib arranged. to engage the upper shoulder of a drew-bar butt, the lower wall of said hood having a slot therein, a pairl of shouldered blocks insertible from the front end of said hood, the shoulders of said blocks being adapted 'to engage Jthe lower shoulder of a draw-bar butt, and a spreader member insertible through said slot and arranged to have the upper portion thereof t between said shouldered blocks, the side walls of the hood being pro vided on their inner faces with abutnients with which said blocks engage when the latter are in operative position.
In witness that I claim' the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 17 th day of March, 1916.
