DRAW-BAR AND TWO-PART-YOKE CONNECTION.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented oet.. e, iai-a.'
Application filed July 13, 1916, Serial No; 109,008. Renewed August 27, 1917. Serial No. 188,498.
To aU wlw/1L it may concern.'
lle it known that I, JOHN F. OGONNOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draw-Bar and Twolart- Yoke Connections, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofments in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a frFont 1g. 4 is a vertical, transverse section of the lyoke taken on the' line 4 4 of Fig. 1. And
Fig. 5 isv a perspective of the locking block employed.
In said drawing, 10 denotes the draw bar and A the improved two-part yoke. The yoke A, as shown, comprises members 11 and 12 each of loop formation, the upper and lower arms being connected at the front end thereof by vertical side wa1ls13-13. The yoke member 11 is provided near the front end thereof on top, with an inwardlyl extended hinge lug 14 with which cooperates a correspondingly located hinge lug 15 on the otlier yoke member .12. The two yoke members 11 and 12 are assembled by first placing the same substantially end to end and then swinging the two members into parallel as shown in the drawing. The parts may then be held together at their rear end by means of a bolt 16 passing through alined perforations ina plurality of over-lapping ears 17-17 on the yokemembers. At their lower ends, each of the yoke members 11 and 12 at the front end thereof, is provided with a horizontally extending portion 18 and vertical fiange 19, the latter being spaced from the corresponding side 'wall 13 and forming a channel therebetween. The flanges 19-19 abut each other when the yoke members are in assembled position and are adapted to have slipped longitudinally thereover, the locking block B. The locking block B is provided with a transversely extended shoulder 20, longitudinal, central groove 21 on its underface arranged to fit over the flanges 19, and depending side walls 22-22, the latter being transversely slotted as indicated at 23 to receive the key 24. The latter also passes through alined perforations in the side plates 13 of the yoke members and the flanges 19. t
When the two parts of the yoke member A are in operative position, they are provided with anV upper transversely extending shoulder 25 which coperates with the upper shoulder 26 of the draw bar butt. Before the block B is inserted in the yoke, it is apparent that the drawJ bar butt may be moved into operative position and then the block B applied by slipping the same longitudinally between the side Walls of the yoke and over the flanges 19. When the block B is in proper position, the key 24 is then inserted which thus holds the block in position. From the preceding description, it will be seen that the block B assists in preventing lateral separation of the two yoke members at the bottom, since the two flanges 19-19 are confined within the recess 21 of the block. Furthermore, by the arrangement illustrated, the key 24 is placed under quadruple shears, thus minimizing tendency to bend and strengthening the entire arrangement.
I claim:
1. The combination with a two-part yoke, of a removable locking block adapted to engage a shoulder of a draw bar butt, said block and yoke parts having coperating means preventing lateral separation of the yoke parts when the latter and the block are in operative position.
2. A yoke for Vdraft riggings havingv a hood at its forward end within which is adapted to be received the butt of a draw bar, a locking block removable longitudinally from said hood and having a shoulder adapted to coperate with a shoulder ofthe draw bar, a key extending transversely through the side walls of the hood and through said block, the hood of said yoke being provided' with means through which the key extends arranged to place the latter in quadruple shear.
3. A yoke comprising two parts which, when assembled, form a hood at their forward ends adapted to receive a draw bar butt, said yoke members having upstanding Iianges at the center thereof in the bottom of the hood, a locking block insertible within the hood, and a key extending transversely through the sidewalls of said hood and said upstanding flanges whereby the key is placed in quadruple shear.v
#LA yoke comprising two parts which, when assembled, form a hood at their forward ends to receive a draw bar butt, -said hood having an upper, transversely eXtend ing shoulder to engage the upper shoulder of adraw bar and a removable locking block insertible within said hood to engage the lower shoulder of the draw bar, said block and yoke parts having integral coperating means to prevent lateral separation of the yoke parts.
5. As an article of manufacture, a yoke comprising two parts arranged 1n parallel when in operative position,
each of said yoke parts having an upturned flange at its forward end, the flanges abutting each other when the yoke parts are assembled, and a shouldered locking block having a`receSs on its underface fitting said flanges and thereby adapted to prevent lateral separation of the yoke parts.
6. As an article of manufacture, a yoke comprising two parts arranged in parallel when in operative position, each of said yoke parts having an upturned flange at its forward end, the flanges abutting each other when the yoke parts are assembled, and a shouldered locking block having a recess on its under-face fitting said anges and thereby adapted to prevent lateral separation of the yoke parts, and a key extending transversely through said block and said flanged portions of the yoke parts.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 11th day of July, 1916.
