YOKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1918.
Application filed October 23, 1914. Serial No. 868,206.
citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Yokes, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in yokes.
An object of the invention is to provide a yoke for draft riggings which may be attached to draw bars of the M. C. B. type .without the necessity of bolts, rivets or keys.
The invention furthermore consists in 1mprovements in the parts and devices and novel combinations of the parts anddevices, as herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a yoke and rear portion of a draw bar showing my improvements, the band employed being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a portion of the structure shown in Fig. 1 and illustrating more particularly the connecting means between the yoke and draw bar. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical sectional views taken substantially on the lines 3-3 and 4-4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the band which I employ.
In said drawing, 10 denotes the rear end of an M. C. B. draw bar, having the usual upper and lower shoulders 11-11 at the front thereof. B denotes a yoke of substantially U-shape, having upper and lower arms 1212, rear connecting piece 13 and web let. At their front ends, the arms 12 are each provided with side flanges 15, end flange 16, transversely extending gib or shoulder 17 cooperable with one of the shoulders 11, and an outwardly extending rib or shoulder 18 which extends along the sides and top or bottom of the free end. The outer faces of the ends 'of the arms 1212 are also inclined or flared. as indicated at 19.
Slidably mounted on the arms of the yoke B is a band C, which comprises parallel side walls 20 2O and upper and lower walls 2121, which converge and are adapted to fit and cooperate with the flared surfaces 19-19. The width of the band C is such that when in operative position, as shown in Fig. 1, with its forward edges 22 in engagement with the ribs or shoulders 18'18,' the rear edge 23 of the band lies substantially flush with the rear end of the draw bar butt 10.
From the preceding description it will be seen that a very strong and substantial connection is provided for betweenthe yoke and draw bar and that the two parts may be readily assembled by first slipping the band C back upon the yoke and inserting the butt of the draw bar between the arms 12-12 and then pulling the draw bar until the shoulders 11 thereof engage the shoulders 17 after which the band C is slipped forwardly until it engages the shoulders 18 and wedges upon the inclined surfaces 19.
I claim In a device of the character described, the combination with a U-shaped yoke strap having the ends of the arms thereof provided with transverse shoulders adapted to cooperate with the usual shoulders of a draw bar. side flanges on each arm extending from said shoulders rearwardly and united with the main portions of saidarms, the upper I and lower surfaces of the yoke arms at the free ends thereof being inclined and said free ends of the arms being also provided with rearwardly facing, vertically and horizontally extending shoulders located in a plane perpendicular. to the axis of the yoke, and a band having the. upper and lower walls thereof inclined to cooperate with said inclined surfaces of the yoke arms. the said shoulders being adapted to engage the front horizontal and vertical edges of said band to limit the forward movement thereof with respect to the yoke.
JOHN F. OCONNOR.
