TWO-PART HORIZONTAL YOKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
Application filed January 6, 1917. Serial No. 140,881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Two-Part Horizontal Yokes, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in two-part horizontal yokes.
The object of the invention is to provide a horizontal yoke for railway draft riggings wherein the yoke is formed of two members detachably connected to the draw bar and to each other, the connections beingguch that, when the yoke arts and draw bar are assembled, separatlon of the yoke parts is prevented.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a iortion of a draw bar and my improved yo e assembled therewith. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 and taken on the line 22 thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the forward end of one of the yoke members employed in the construction illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but illustrating a different embodiment of the invention. And Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the structure illustrated in .Fig. 4: and taken on the line 55 thereof.
Referring to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 10 denotes the shank of a draw bar having the usual standard butt 11, the latter being formed with upper and lower shoulders 12 and 13. The improved yoke, as shown, comprises two counterpart members 14-44. each of which is in the form of a loop with the arms thereof extending horizontally in the same plane. The arms of each member are connected at the rear by a transverse portion 15 and at the front by vertically extending walls 16-16, the latter being connected by a transversely extending wall 17 Each of the walls 17 at its forward edge, is provided with an inturned transversely extending gib or shoulder 18 adapted to cooperate with the corresponding shoulder 12 or 13 of the draw bar butt. The yoke members 1414 are detachably connected at their forward ends by means of a hinge joint, the latter comprising an oifset flange 19 on one yoke member, the flange 19 being provided with an inwardly extending, substantially circular lug 20. The corresponding portion of the other yoke member is provided with an outwardly extending, substanother and engaging the hinge joint, as above described. The two yoke members are then swung into parallel as illustrated in :Fig. 1
and may be detachably connected at their rear end by means of a cotter 24. In this condition, the gibs 18 will be brought into engagement with the butt shoulders 12 and 13 and the yoke members prevented from either vertical or longitudinal relative movement.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the two yoke members 114.114 are provided at their front ends with transversely extending walls 117-117 which also act as gibs or shoulders to engage the shoulders of the draw bar butt. Furthermore, the yoke members 114 are each provided on one side with a longitudinally arranged curved flange 40 and on the opposite side with a corresponding longitudinally extending rib.
bar shoulder, the upper member being there by adapted to be supported I fromthe --dra-W- bar, said members having integral coiiperatmovement between the members, said means,
when the parts are assembled; preventing vertical separation and thereby adapted to retain saidmembers in operative. relation with the drawbar. 10
In Witness that I c1aim,,the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 30th day of Dec., 1916.
Q i JOHN F. OCONNOR.
