DRAFT-YOKE FOR RAILWAY-CAR DRAFT-RIGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oc t. 6, 19kt.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. J oHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,'have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Yokes for Railway-Car DraftRigging, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates toimprovcments in draft yokes for railway car draft rigging.
One object of my invention is to provide a draft yoke, which while performing its usual function as a yoke may serve as a draw bar extension, and one capable of employment with the standard draw bar.
A further object is to provide a draft yoke adapted to forwardly extend the standard draw bar without change of stop members or the location of same, and without change of other parts of the draft rigging.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Figure '1 is a side elevation of a draft rigging for railway cars embodying my inventn .1. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the parts in normal position. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the position of parts in extreme forward movement of the draw bar. Fig. l is a cross sectional view on line +ll,of Fig. Fig. 5 is an enlarged dctail showing in perspective the thimble. Fig. 7 is a plan view showing the position of parts in full compressing movement. Fig. (i is an enlarged view of a modification in the thimble.
Referring to the drawings 8, 8 represent draft sills or parts of the ear frame to which the draft rigging is attached, 9 the end sills. 10 the buffer block. 11 the draw bar carry iron. 12. 12 stop members provided with the front stop shoulders 13. 13 and rear stop shoulders 14, H.- front limiting stop shoulders 15. 1:3 and rear limiting stop shoulders 16, 1o. 17 the draw bar of standard type, 18, 18 tic plates suitably secured to the draft sills: all the foregoing "parts being of well known construction.
The numeral 19 represents the draft yoke having the upper and lower limbs 20 and 21 respectively. the forward ends of .which 22 are i'omvardly extended beyond the front stop shoulders. and engage the hollow yoke head 23,- which by means of thc longitudiopening of the'draft yoke 19. The thinlble 31 comprises upper and lower horizontal plates 32 and respectively. each provided with a longitudinal slot Ell adapted for the passage of a limb of the, draft yoke therethrough, and front and rear vertical transand verse plates and 36 respectively securing the plates 3:? and 33 to each other. and preferably integral with the same and the central connecting web 37.
The longitudinal grooves 3.4. 3-! are prcf erably provided with longitudinally disposed ribs 38, 1-38 to adapt them for easy sliding movement upon the limbs of the draft yoke. 'lhe thimblc 31 is placed. on said draft yoke back of the limHlQ/i'i and in front of the front follower 2h. On forward movement of the draw bar the thimble 31 is in loose engagement with the limbs of the yoke. and on rearward movement of the draw bar the rear end of said draw bar engages the forward plate 35 of the said thimble while. the rear plate 36 of said thimble engages the front followcrfh'. and while the draw bar moves rcarwardly through the head '23 of the draft yoke the coupler key slides rcarwardlyin the slots 2+ in the said head. the draw bar being in direct cngagcmcnt in bullingmovement with v the slidablc thimble 3i.
Fig. (3 illustrates a modification of thc thimblc. the same being provided on its upper and lower faces with a longitudinal groove 39. the sides of which are formed by the shoulders 39. 39. the said grooves being each adapted to receive a limb of the draft yoke therein. .ln the modilication the thimblc is preferably made of two parts l0 and +1. and preferably engaging each other by tongue and groove engagement. as illustrated at the numeral lithe memhcrs 1-0 and 41 being :nlaptcd for insertion at ither side of the draft yoke into the lateral opening 30 of said yoke; and being provided with means. preferably bolts or rivcts l3, securing them together.
1'. In a draft rigging, the combination of a draw bar With a draft yoke and a thimhie, the said thimbie being in sliding engngenient with the draft yeke and adapted to engage the draw bar, the said thimble comprising a block provided with longitudinal slots for the passage of the limbs of the draft yoke.
2. In a draft rigving, the combination 10 with a draw bar, dra t gear and draft yoke, of a thimble, said thinlhle being interposed between the draw bar and draft gear, and slidably engaging the draft yoke.
