SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,011, dated July 21, 1903.

To all whom it may concern;-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK 13. TOWN- SEND, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State 5 of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Friction Draft'Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to friction draft-rig- IO ging for railway-cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a friction draft-rigging for railway-cars of a simple, strong, efficient, and durable construction capable of being cheaply manufacx5 tured and'readily and quickly applied to the car, in which the spring is arranged longitudinally of the draw-bar and in line therewith, and in which the spring resistance, as well as the friction resistance, will effectually oper- 2o ate under both pulling and buifing strains.
My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result-that is to say, it consists, in connection with the draw-bar, a draw-bar extension,
and spring arranged longitudinally and in line with the draw-bar, so as to be in the direct line of draft, of a pair of rotatable friction-blocks, one at each end of the spring and arranged each with its axis transverse to the draw-bar and movable friction-blocks connected with and operated by the draw-bar or its extension and frictionally engaging said rotatable friction-blocks, and means for causing the rotatable friction-blocks to turn as the draw-bar moves back and forth. Two
pairs of movable friction-blocks are preferably employed, one for each of the rotatable friction-blocks. My invention also consists in the novel devices and in the novel combina- 0 tions of parts and devices herein shown and described. In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view, partly in horizontal section, of a fric- 5 tion draft-rigging embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section illustrating a modification, and Fig. 4 is a partial horizontal section on line 4 4 of Fig. 3.

F F are a pair of rotatablefriction-blocks, one at each'end of the spring or one before and one behind the same, arranged with their axes transverse to the'draw-bar and preferably with their axes upright, as illustrated in the drawings.
G G and G G are two pairs of movable 7o friction-blocks, one pair in frictional engagement with each of said rotatable frictionblocks. The rotatable friction-blocks F each have convex friction-surfaces f, preferably furnished with corrugations f to increase 75. their friction-surface, and the movable friction-blocks G G and G G each have concave friction surfaces 9, furnished with corresponding corrugations g to fit the corrugated vconvex friction-surface of the rotatable fric-- 8o tion-blocks F F.
To cause the rotatable friction-blocks to turn or partially rotate between the movable friction-blocks G G and G G, respectively, as the draw-bar moves back and forth, I provide the rotatable friction -blocks and the side plates or stop-castings D D with inter.- engaging notches f and lugs or projections (1 the lugs or projections being preferably on the side plates or stop-castings and the notches or recesses on the rotatable frictionblocks.
In operation under buffingstrains the rear pair of friction-blocks G G are held stationary by the rear stops on the stop-castings, and 9 5 the front pair of friction-blocks G G move with the draw bar, thus compressing the spring and causing the front pair of frictionblocks to be pressed forcibly against the front rotatable friction-block, which is caused to I00 turn on its axis as it is moved back by the draw-bar and the pair of friction-blocks or followers between which it is embraced, thus adding the frictionalresistance due to its rotation to the direct resistance of the spring in overcoming buffing strains, and under pulling strains the operation is the same, excepting that in this case it is the front pair of friction-blocks and front rotatable friction-block which is held stationary by the front stops of the stop-castings, while the rear pair of friction-blocks and the rear rotatable friction-block moves with the drawbar and compresses the spring. A supplemental spring 0 inside the mainspring C may preferably be employed.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 a pair of smaller rotatable frictionblocks F F are substituted in the place of each of the single friction-blocks illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the construction and operation being otherwise the same.
I claim 1. In a friction draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, draw-bar extension and spring, of a pair of rotatable friction-blocks, one at each end of the spring, and each transverse to the draw-bar, and two pairs of movable friction-blocks in frictional engagement therewith, substantially as specified.
2. In a friction draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, draw-bar extension and spring, of two rotatable friction-blocks trans"- verse to the draw-bar, one at each end of the spring, and two movable friction-blocks one in frictional engagement with each of said rotatable friction-blocks, substantially as specified.
3. In a friction draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, draw-bar extension and spring, of two rotatable friction-blocks transverse to the draw-bar, one at each end of the spring, two movable friction-blocks one in frictional engagement with each of said rotatable friction-blocks, and means for causing said rotatable friction-blocks to turn as the draw-bar moves, substantially as specified.
4. In a friction draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, draw-bar extension and spring, of a pair of rotatable friction-blocks, one at each end of the spring and each transverse to the draw-bar, two pairs of movable friction blocks in frictional engagement therewith, and means for causing said rotatable friction-blocks to turn as the draw-bar moves, substantially as specified.
5. In a friction draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, spring, and a pair of side plates or stop-castings, of two rotatable friction-blocks, one at each end of the spring and each transverse to the draw-bar, two movable friction-blocks in frictional engagement therewith, and interengaging devices on the rotatable blocks and stationary side plates or stop-castings for causing the rotatable friction-blocks to turn, substantially as specified.
G. In a friction draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, spring, and a pair of side plates or stop-castings, of two rotatable friction-blocks, one at each end of the spring and each transverse to the draw-bar, two pairs of movable frictionblocksin frictional engagement therewith, and interengaging devices on the rotatable blocks and stationary side plates or stop-castings for causing the rotatable friction-blocks to turn, substantially as specified.
7. In a friction draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, draw-bar extension and spring, and a pair of side plates or stop-castings having stops to limit the movement of the draw-bar, and upper and lower guides, of two rotatable friction-blocks, one at each end of the spring and each transverse to the draw-bar, and having each a device engaging a device on the stationary stop-casting to rotate said friction-block, and two frictionblocks movable with the draw-bar and each frictionally engaging one of said rotatable friction-blocks, substantially as specified.
8. In a friction draw-bar, the combination with a draw-bar, draw-bar extension, spring, and a pair of side plates or stop-castings having stops to limit the movement of the drawbar, and upper and lower guides, of two rotatable frictionblocks, one at each end of the spring and having each a device engaging a device on the stationary stop-casting to rotate said friction-block, and two pairs of friction-blocks movable with the draw-bar and each pair frictionally engaging one of said rotatable friction-blocks, substantially as specified.
9. The combination with adraw-bar, drawbar extension and spring, of a pair of side plates or stop-castings having stops and upper and lowerguides for the followers, of two rotatable friction-blocks transverse to the drawbar, and two pairs of followers having curved friction-faces engaging the curved frictionsurface of said rotatable friction-blocks, substantially as specified.
10. The combination with a draw-bar,drawbar extension and spring, of a pair of side plates or stop-castings having stops and upper and lower guides for the followers, of two rotatable friction-blocks transverse to the draw-bar, two pairs of followers having curved friction-faces engaging the curved friction-surface of said rotatable frictionblock and means for causing the rotatable friction-block to turn under movement of the draw-bar, substantially as specified.
