DRAFT-RIGGING- FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
Specification of hetters Patent.
Application filed October 28, 191%. Set 863,210.
cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Riggings for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a:
full, clear, concise, and exact description,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in draft riggings for railway cars.
An object of the inventionis to provide a spring draft rigging for railwaycars consisting of few parts of relatively. inexpensive construction and which may be readily assembled and disassembled.
In the drawing forming apart of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of adraft rlggi ng, showing one embodiment of my improvements.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on, the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and showing the gear under full buff, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
. In said drawing, 1010 denote the center sills or other draft members, the same being provided with rear slots 11--11 and elongated front slots 1212. Mounted within the rear slots 1111 is a stationary key 13,
the latter having mounted thereon and between the sills, a hollow casing 14 which, as shown, is substantially rectangular in cross section and provided with an integral front wall 15, said wall 15 being slotted as indicated at 16 on the sides thereof to receive therethrough the forwardly extended side arms 17 of a yoke 18, the rear end 19 of the yoke forming a rear follower in engagement with the key 13. The side arms 17 of the yoke are provided with elongated slots 20 at the front thereof to receive the coupler key 21 by which said yoke is connected to the draw bar 22. Mounted within the casing 1 1 and between the front wall 15 thereof and the rear portion 19 of the yoke, are nested springs 23. The inner faces of .irearward movement by the key 13.
the side walls 24 of the casing 14 are recessed or grooved, as indicated at 25, to form guideways for the side arms 17 of the yoke. And, said side walls are furthermore provided with elongated slots 26 to thereby per mit the casing 14eto slide back and forth.
The 0 eration of the device is as. fol-- lows :-Lpon inward movement of the draw bar, .the front wall 15 of the casi 1g 14 is engaged by the rear end' of the draw bar and the springs compressedbetween it and the rear portion 19 of the yoke which acts as a follower, the same being held from rearward movement of the casing 14: is provrvided for by the elongated slots 26. Under ldraft, the yoke 18 is pulled forwardly by tmeans of the key' 21 and the springs 23 ompressed between the'rear wall thereof and the front end or wall 15 of the casing 14.
Although I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred embodiment of .my improvement, yet I am aware that various changes and modifications may be made in the details and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I contemplate all such changes and modifications as come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
1. In a draft rigging of the character de- Patented Mar. 14, thifi.
The i scribed, the combination with draft sills, of
a stationary key mounted in said sills, a casing slidably mounted on 'said key and provided with a front end wall and open at the rear, a yoke mounted within said casing and having arms extended forwardly through openings in the front wall of said casing and adapted to be connected to a draw bar, said yoke being insertiblelongitudinally within the casing through the open rear end of the latter, and cushioning means interposed between said ffont wall and the rear end ofsaid yoke.
2. Ina railway draft rigging, the combination with draft sills, of a slidablymounted casing mounted between said sills and having a closed end Wall and open at its inner Walls thereof for the arms of Said other end, a yoke sliciably mounted Within yoke.
sseid easmg and having its ends extended through openings in said closed end Wall, cushioning means interposed between said endwall and said yeke, said casing being provided with guideways formed on the Witnesses: 4 CARRIE G. Benz LUGILLE HIGGINS.
