To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LTHOMAS B. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Friction and Direct-Acting Spring Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combined friction and direct-acting spring draft-rigging for railway-cars. A
The object of my invention is to provide a combined friction and direct-acting spring draft-rigging of a simple, strong, efficient, and durable construction, the side plates or stop-castings of which may be of simple ordinary form and applied to the draft-timbers or center sills of the carin the ordinary manner. Y
My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result-that is to say,it consists, in connection with the car-coupler, draw-bar, draw-bar extension, and apair of side plates or stop-castings having front and rear stops, of a transversely-acting spring, a longitudinally-acting spring, followers, a pairof transversely-movable friction plates or blocks having oppositely-inclined friction-faces, and a longitudinally-movable friction shell or barrel having a pair of oppositely-inclined friction-faces engaging the corresponding friction-faces on said friction plates or blocks, the rear follower under pulling strains moving said friction shell or barrel with the draw-bar, while the vfront follower holds the transversely-movable plates or blocks from longitudinal movement and through them holds the middle follower also stationary, and thus compresses both the longitudinally-acting and the transverse-acting springs,and under bufng strains the rear follower holding said friction shell or barrel stationary,while the front follower moves the transversely-movable friction plates or blocks longitudinally with the draw-bar and through them the middle follower also, thus causing both the longitudinally-acting and the transversely-acting springs to be compressed and adding in both cases orunder both-pulling and buihng strains the frictional resistance of the inclined friction-faces on the shell and friction-plates to the resistance of the springs.
My invention also consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown or described.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section of a draftrigging embodying my invention, taken on the line 1 1 ofFig. 2, Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a crosssection on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the rear follower. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the transversely movable friction plates or blocks, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the friction shell or barrel.
In said drawings, A represents the drafttimbers, A the center sills, A2 the cross-sill, A3 the buffer-block, A4 the buer-plate, and A5 the carry-iron, of a railway-car.
Bis the draw-bar of the coupler. B' and B2 represent the draw-bar extension, the same being preferably in the form of a yoke, secured to the draw-bar by the rivets b and interengaging shoulders 1J b2.
C,C,andCzarethefollowers,andDDare the side plates or stop-castings, the same having front and rear stops d and d for the followers to abut against and upper and lower guides d2 d3 in or on which the followers reciprocate, the lower guides d3 being removably secured in place by bolts d4 to facilitate the insertion and removal of the draft-rigging.
E is a longitudinally-arranged spring be tween the middle and rear followers C' C2, and F is a transversely-arranged spring between the transversely movable friction plates or blocks G G. The transversely-movable friction plates or blocks G G have oppositely-inclinced friction-faces g g, which bear against the corresponding inclined frictionfaces h h on the longitudinally-movable friction shell or barrel H, which is preferably rectangular in crosssection, as shown in the drawings. The longitudinally-movable friction shell or barrel H has interior shoulders h2 h2 for the middle-follower C to abut against. The transversely-movable friction plates or blocks Gr Gr are interposed between the front and middle followers C C', and the friction of their end faces g2 g3 against the followers affords a material resistance in ad- ICC dition to the resistance produced by the friction of the inclined friction-faces g g of said plates against the similarly-inclined frictionfaces h h of the shell or barrel H. The friction plates or blocks G G are chambered out at g5 g5 to give additional length or room for the transversely-acting spring F.
As the transversely-movable frictionplates G G under tension or thrust of the transversely-acting spring F bear directly against the surrounding or confining friction shell or barrel H, it will be understood that in my invention the side plates or stop-castings D D 7and the draft timbers or sills to which they are secured are entirely relieved from lateral thrust of the transversely-acting spring, and thus from any transverse blows or shocks, which would otherwise be transmitted to them from the draw-bar through the transverselyacting spring. I thus in my invention secure all the advantages of a transversely-acting spring and a frictional resistance actuated thereby without any of the disadvantages or weaknesses ordinarily incident thereto.
The rear follower C2 is preferably provided with integral flanges or casings O3 C3 to inclose the longitudinally-acting spring E at the sides and to serve as stops to limit the compression of the longitudinally acting spring.
Inside the springs E and F smaller springs E' and F are preferably employed, as is customary.
The side plates or stop-castings D D are secured to the framework of the car in the usual manner by bolts d5 d5.
In operation under buing strains the rear follower C2 and the friction shell or barrel H are held stationary by abutment against the rear stops d of the side plates or stop-castings, while the front and middle followers C C and the transversely-movable friction plates or blocks G G move rearwardly with the draw-bar, lthus compressing the longitudinal or direct-acting spring E and also the transversely acting spring F and causing the transversely-movable friction plates or blocks G to move toward each other against the frictional resistance encountered by the inclined friction-faces g g and h h and that of their straight friction-faces g2 g3 against th followers C C. Under pulling strains the operation is the same, excepting 'that in this case it is the front follower C and the friction-plates G G which are held from longitudinal movement by abutment against the front stops d d of the side plates -0r stop-castings, while the rear follower C2 and the friction shell or barrel H move with the drawbar.
I claimp l. In a combined friction and direct-acting spring draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, draw-bar extension, side plates or stop-castings and followers, of a longitudinally-acting spring, a transversely -acting spring, a pair of transversely-movable friction plates or blocks, and a longitudinallymovable friction shell or barrel, substantially as specified.
2. Ina combined friction and direct-acting spring draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, draw-bar extension, side plates or stop-castings and followers, of a longitudinally-acting spring, a transverselyacting spring, a pair of transversely-movable friction plates or blocks having inclined frictionfaces, and a longitudinally-movable friction shell or barrel having inclined friction-faces engaging the inclined friction-faces of said transversely movable friction plates or blocks, substantially as specified.
3. In a combined friction and di rect-acting springhdraft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, draw-bar extension, side plates or stop-castings and followers, of a longitudinally acting spring, a transversely acting spring, a pair of transversely-movable friction plates or blocks having inclined frictionfaces, and a longitudinally movable friction shell or barrel having inclined frictionfaces engaging the inclined friction-faces of said transversely-movable friction plates or y blocks, said longitudinally-movable friction shell or barrel having shoulders for the middle follower to bear against, substantially as specified.

In a combined friction and direct-acting spring draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, draw-bar extension, side plates or stop-castings and followers, of a longitudinally-acting spring, a transversely -acting spring, a pair of transversely-movable friction plates or blocks havinginclined frictionfaces, and a longitudinally-movable friction shell or barrel having inclined friction-faces engaging the inclined friction-faces of said transversely movable friction plates or blocks, the rear follower having an integral flange or case to limit the compression of said longitudinally-acting spring, substantially as specified.
5. The combination with a draw-bar, drawbar extension,side plates or stop-castings and followers, of a transversely-acting spring, a pair of transversely-movable friction-blocks against which said spring bears and having inclined friction-faces, and a longitudinallymovable friction shell or barrel surrounding and taking the lateral thrust of said transversely-movable friction-blocks and having inclined friction-faces engaging the inclined friction-faces of said longitudinally-movable friction-blocks, substantially as specied.
