UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STACY B. HASELTINE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. MINER, OF CHAZY, NEW YORK.
KEYLESSiDRAFT-RIGGING YOKE.
' Application flied April 13.
To ult /c/mm it muy concern.'
lle it. known that l, S'racv B. llAsni/lixr.. a citizen ot' the United States, .residing at (`l|icago-. in the county of Cook and State ot' Illinois, have, invented al certain new and useful Improvement in Keyless Draftligging Yokes. ot' which the followingis a full. clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specitication.
This invention relates to improvements in keyless draft rigging yokes.'
For several yeais past, the railroads have been desirous ot obtaining adra'w-bar and yoke. connection which will avoid slotting of the sills and at. the same ltime be readily detachable.. Furthermore, the vrailroads are demanding a yoke connection Aof the above character which is adapted tol all types of standard draw-bars whether the latter' have coupler key slots or not. A further requisite demanded by the railroads is a detachable draw-bar and yoke connection vso arranged that all the )arts are easily accessible and wherein the dl aw-bar may beremoved or replaced without disturbing the gear proper.
The object of my invention is to provide -a yoke for railway draft riggings of simple.
construction and which will embody all the :ulvantagcous features above indicated.
ln the drawing forming a part of this specificatiom. Figure 1 is a part side elevation. part longitudinal section of a yoke embodying my in'iproveinents` Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the yoke illustrated in Fig. l and taken substantially on the line 2-2 thereof.v Fig. 3 isa transverse vertical section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 isa detail perspective of the locking block which I enrploy.. And-Fig..5 is a view` similar to Fig., l illustratin -my improvements adapted tn a tandem yo. e. f
Referring to said drawing, 1t) denotes a A standard draw-bar having the usual:b utt 1l provided with upper silioufld/er ,12. andzlower shoulder 18. The yoke A., which as shown is preferably 'a steelexisting, is provided with upper arm 14,'.lowerarm15rear conneeting piece 1.6, anda hollow, boxlike hood or head lT at its front endltlie hood being open at, the front and provided with side walls 19e-18, and upper wall 19,'the upper wall 19 being provided on` its'innerface Specification of Letters Patent.

with anl integral, transversely extending gib or shoulder 20, the latter being adapted to cooperate with the upper shoulder 12 of the draw-bar. Within the yoke a shock absorbing member is illustrated conventionally bv dotted lines. the shock absorber shown in the drawing being a well known type of friction gear.
The hooded end of the yoke is provided in the` bottom thereof with an enlarged recess Q1 through which lis insertible. and removable a locking block 22 the latter having` an opstanding angular shoulder 23 at its front end which is arranged to coperate with the lower shoulder 13 of the drawbar. To suitably brace the block 22 in draft movement of the gear the side walls 18 of the hood are. provided with integral, in-l wardlv extended shoulders or abutments 24, there being sullicient clearance therebetween to permit `the insertion and removal of the draw-bzw; To support the block 22 in lace, I have provided a key 25 which is og) substantially the same width as the block 22. 'lhe key 25 has an elongated horizontally extending arm 26 which passes through a slot 27 in the depending flange 2S, beneath the block and tinally at its front end into a recess 29 formed in the transversel extending wall 30. The key has a ownwardly extended arml at itsrcar end by which it is adapted to he held in place as by means of the bolt 32 which passes therethrough and through a 'corresponding per- Toration in the depending flange 28. ln order to minimize tendency of the key to b'end under the weight of the locking block and draw-bar. the side walls of the hood are provided with inwardly extending, substantially rectangular ledges or shelves 13E-'132, see Fig. 3. on which the key is supported. 0n account of the shoulders 32-32. the locking block 23 is correspondingly recessed. on its sides. as indicated at 333fl so as to permit the block to be. in sorted and removed.
sol
To disassemblc thev parts, the bolt 32 is first removed after which the key 25 is withdrawn. Thereupon, the block 22 is lowered vthrough the opening and the draw-bar may tra-ted in Figs. 1 to 4except that the yoke A is provided with upper and lower transverselylrx`l extending shoulders v40 at. the inner end of the draw-bar so that the latter will foreethe yoke rearwardly under buff and cause the yoke to act as a tandem yoke.l Although Ihave herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred -mean's of carrying out my invention, thesame is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and' modifications that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1L A yoke. having parallel arms and provided with a hooded forward end integrally ,connecting said arms, said hooded end being adapted to receive a shouldered drawbar butt therewithin, said yoke being provided with means arranged ytoengage the upper` shoulder of a draw-bar butt, `and devices eoperable with the lower shoulder of a draw-bar butt, for detaehablylocking the yoke to a` draw-bar, said devices including a shouldered locking block removable from below through an opening in the bottom of said hooded end, and a key for supporting said block, Ithe walls of said hood having ledges on which said key is supported.
2. A keyless yokev having opening'and having ashoulder adapted to engage the lower shoulder of afdraw-bar a hooded for; ward end, sald hooded end being provided` butt, the sidewalls of said hooded end having shoulders projecting into said recess and said block having 'the sides thereof recessed to `correspond with said shoulders. and means foinsupporting said-block in operatiie position.
3.A keyless yoke having a hooded cforward end` Said hooded end heilig provided with4 an openingthrough the bottoni wall thereof, a hloek insertihle through. said opening and having a shoulder adaptedi'to engage-the lower 'shoulder of a drawhar butt, the side walls of said hooded end having shoulders projeeting intosaid rece-ssand said block having the sides thereof recessed to correspond vwith said shoulders. and means forsupportingsaid bl'oCk inv operativev position; Asaid means including a flat: key-on which said bloelrests, the" key in turn resting'upon said shoulders on the side walls. l 4. `lA keyless yokeha'ving an integral hood at its front end,' the liottoni \\"all of the hood having yan opening therethrough, a locking block insertihle through a key for supporting said block in position. said key' comprising a' widetlat' inenllwil havinga down'turned flange, said vkeyV being'. insertible'thrmigh a slo in thedower' porA tion ofithe hood.
