DRAFT-'YOKE FOR RAILWAY-GAR DRAFT-RIGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
P t nted Feb. 22, 1921.
Application filed July 5, 1919. Serial No; 2,08,?67.
accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. My invention relates to draft yokes for railway car fdraft rigging. I
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a draft yoke of simple construction in which provision is made for the lateral swinging of the draw bar. Other objects will appear from the description hereinafter following.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, part in vertical section, of a draft yoke embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the forward portion of said yoke. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a yoke strap of general U-shape, provided at its free ends, and preferably upon the inner faces thereof, with laterally extended preferably arcuate tongues 1212, which are adapted to enter similarly conformed grooves 1313 interiorly provided in the side walls 14 of a yoke head 15. The said yokehead is provided with a draw bar opening 16 to receive the draw bar 17, and
is transversely slotted, as at 18, for the passage of the coupler key, by means of which the draw bar may be secured within the yoke head. The upper and lower walls of the yoke head are provided with arcuate shoulders 19 against which the lugs inwardly extended/from the inner faces of the U-shaped yoke strap are adapted to engage. The said lugs are referenced 20 and are preferably integral with the laterally extended tongues 12. The yoke head is provided above and below with outwardly ex.-
sides of the yoke strap 10.
tended walfs 21 on either-side of the arms of theyoke stra 10, which walls are rear- ,wardly outwar 1y flared, as indicated at 22, and also slightly outwardly flared forwardly, as indicated at 23, from a point,
as at 2 1, in Fig. 2 of the drawings, which is located substantially opposite the center ofpivoting between the yoke head and the yoke strap. In the construction described, it will be apparent that on lateralmovement of the draw bar the head of the yoke will pivot or swingabout the front end of the yoke strap as the center, the limit of its pivoting action being fixed by the walls 22, when brought into engagement with the On forward movement of the draw bar, the pull of the yoke head is against the lug 20 and on rearward movement of the draw bar the yoke head and the draw bar keyed thereto will slide rearwardly upon the yoke strap. I claim:
1. In a draft yoke for railway cars, in
swinging head mounted between the free and the yoke head having upper and lower flaring shoulders adapted to engage the sides of the yoke strap to limit the swinging of the head upon the strap.
2. In a draft yoke for railway cars, in combination, a U-shaped yoke strap and a yoke head, the yoke strap being provided on its inner faces with shoulders, the yoke head being provided with upper and lower shoulders engaging those upon the yoke strap, the sides of the strap being provided with laterally projecting tongues, the yoke head having grooves to receive said tongues and the yoke head being further provided with shoulders having a forward and a rearward flare to limit the swinging movement of the yoke head upon the yoke strap.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my' name this 16th
