DRAFT-RIGGING YOKE.
Applicationfled August 20, 1917. Serial No. 187,212.
To all 11i/10m. t may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN F. OCoNNon, residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, and JOHN R. MITCHELL, residing at Evanston, Cook county, Illinois, both citizens of the United States, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging Yokes, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
his invention relates to improvements in draft rigging yokes.
The object of the invention is to provide a yoke suitable for railway draft riggin and two-part hea( suitable for connection with an ordinary U- shaped yoke strap of the rivet type.
In the drawings forming part of this specication, Figure 1 is a part vertical, longitudinal section, part side elevation of a draw bary and yoke showing our improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a horizontal, sectional view, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. B'is a vertical, sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1, but illustrating another embodiment of the invention. And Fig. 5 is a vertical, sectional view, taken substantially on-the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring first to the construction shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3, A designates a standard draw bar. B a U-shaped wrought iron lvoke ,strap of the ordinary rivet type, and C-C two members which together form a hood or head to form the intermediate connection hetween the draw har and the strap.
The strap B isof the usual U-,Shape having an upper arm 10, lower arm 11, rear connecting portion 12, filler block 13 and inturned gibs 14-1fi at the front ends of the arms l0 and 1l. Each of the arms-10 and 11 is provided with rivet holes 15--15 and it is obvious that the strap B may be an old strap or a new one.
The members C-C each cal Side wall 16, an upper horizontally extending arm 17 and a lower horizontally extending arm 18. The members C-C are duplicates and are arranged in the manner shown most clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The lower arm 18 of one member C is provided with an upturncd gib at its edge, as indicated at 19, and the upper arm of the other -rivets 21`21 are extended the usual standardly spaced comprise a vertimnler C is provided with a corresponding g1 The upper and lower horizontal arms of the members C-C are also provided with standazdly spaced rivet receivin holes 20-20 and the members C--C and t 1e strap are assembled with the ends of e arms of the .strap interposed between corresponding pairs ofthe horizontal arms 17 and 18 of the members C. When thus assembled, short through the alined rivet. holes 17 and 20, as shown in Fig.
1 o connect the head formed by the members C-C to the draw bar, the vertical walls 16 of said members are slotted, as indicated at 22, to receive a coupler key 23 which is eX- tended through a corresponding slot in the draw bar.
With the arrangement above described, it is apparent that old yoke straps may be em ployed with consequent saving to the users and by connectin the members C-C with the draw bar'in t e manner specified, all of the rivets 21-21 will be placed under double` shear, thus ell'ectively increasing the strength of the yoke connectionf Where it is desired to form a connection with a draw bar not having a coupler key slot, the construction shown 1n Figs. 4 and 5 is employed. In this construction, the members C/"C are similar to the members C-C except that the upper\I arm 117 of one of tbe members and the lower arm 118 of the other of said members is provided with a transverse gib 114 to thereby form a shouldered engagement with the draw bar shoulders 30-30. In this construction, the usual gibs found on the ends of the yoke strap B are either cut 0d' or omitted in new constructions and elongated rivets 121-121 are extended through the'members C', the arms of the yoke B and through the usual rivetholes in the draw har butt. In this arrangement also `it will he apparent that the rivets 121 are placed under double shear due to the fact that each of the members C has shouldcrcd engagement with the draw bar.
We claim:
1. In a yoke, the combination with a U- sha; `d strap having standardly located rivet holes in the arms thereof, of a draw bar, a head comprising two like members each having a vertical portion and upper and lower' horizontally extending arms, the horiaon- Patented Dee. 3, 1m e.
tally extending arms of said meinherbl being overlapped andthe ends of the yoke' strap arms hein@r interposed therebetween, said horizontal arms of said members having holes in alinernent with the rivet holes of the strap, means extending through said holes to connect Said head and strap, and means for operatively connecting both of said ineinbers and the draw har under draft whereby to place Said connecting means between the head and strap under double shear.
2. In a yoke, the combination with a U- shaped Strap having standarflly located rivet holes in the arms thereof, of a head, said head comprising two like members each having a vertieal portion and upper and lower horizontally extending arms, Said horizontally extending arms of said members being overlapped and havin;r the ends of the strap armS interposed therebetween, said arms of said members having holes in alineinent with said rivet holeel of the strap, upper and lower sets eli' short rivets disposed within Said holes and rigidly connecting the strap and said members, the vertical portions* of said meinbers havingslots therein adapted te receive a coupler key for attachment to a draw bar.
In witness that we elaiin the foregoing, we
have hereunto subscribed our naines;v this 15 JOHN F. OCONNOR. J OHN` vR. MITCHELL.
