WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STACY B. HASELTINE, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB. TO WILL AM H. MINER, or.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DRAFT-YOKE FOR RAILWAY-CARDRAFT-RIGGING,
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STACY B. HASELTINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and draft -yokes for railway car draft rigging.
The object of my invention is to provide a ;simple draft yoke so constructed as to permit the ready insertion and removal of the draw bar, and one in which the connecting means between the same maybe reached and handled from the front end of the car.
In the drawings forming a part ofthis specificationeFigure 1 is a perspective view of a draft yoke and draw bar, the rear end thereof only bein shown, embodying my invention; Fig. 2 IS a vertical longitudinal section through the forward end of the draft yoke and the rear end of the draw bar; Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the rear part of the draft yoke; Fig. 4 is adetail showing in perspective one side of the yoke head, the forward end of the upper member of the yoke, a part of the same being broken away along the central longitudinal line thereof, and showing the forward end of the lower member of said yoke and the taper key, the said' lower member being broken away to show the depending flange from said lower member of the yoke; Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing in detail the rear end of the yoke; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the taper key.
In the drawings 7 represents the shank of the draw bar, 8 the butt thereof, 9, 9 oppositely arranged shoulders with which said draw bar is provided, 10 the draft yoke, the said draft yoke having an upper limb 11, a lower limb 12, a rear member 13 dependent from the upper limb 11, and preferably integral therewith. The said upper limb is forwardly provided with a gib 14 adapted to engage the upper shoulder 9 of the draw bar. The said upper member is also provided at its forward endwith lateral depending flanges or plates 15, 15, joined to gether at the bottom and constituting a band Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 4, 1913. Serial No. 782,756.
to surround the draw-bar, and forming with the said upper limb 11 and the lower limb 12 of the yoke a box-like hollow head 16 to receive the butt 8 of the draw bar. The lower llmb 12 is forwardly provided with a transverse lug or shoulder 40 adapted to engage the lower shoulder 9 of the butt of the draw bar, and is also provided with a depending transverse lug or flange 17, preferably integral with the said limb'12, and preferably provided at either edge of said limb with remforcmg preferably integral flanges 18, 18. In preferable construction the said dependmg flange or lug 17 is positioned substantially at a point in the length of said lower limb 12 coincident with the rear face 19 of the butt 8 of the draw bar. The said lateral flanges 15, 15 are downwardly extended at either side of the lower limb 12 of the yoke, and at their lower ends are joined by a transverse preferably. integral plate 20 suitably removed from the lower limb 12 to form a space or recess 21 to receive the,
key 22. The said transverse plate 20 is in preferable construction longitudinally beveled on a line rearwardly converging toward the lower limb 12 of the yoke.
In preferable construction the key 22 is rearwardly tapered, the under-face 23 thereof being suitably beveled to engage against the beveled face of the said transverse member 20. The said key 22 is preferably provided on its under surface with a shoulder 24, which, when-the key is in position within the recess 21, is sufliciently removed from the forward edge 25 of the transverse plate 20 to permit the insertion of means to remove said key 22 from the recess 21, as for instance a pinchbar, should the same be re- -quired. The upper face 26 of said key is i'eaf'war'dly'forced into therecess 21 to lift the lower limb of the yoke and draw bar into position in the manner hereinafter described. The lower limb I2 of the yoke is detachable from the said yoke, and is rearwardly provided withmeans to engage the same to the connecting member 13 of said yoke.
I prefer to employ the means shown in the drawings and described as follows The said connecting member 13 is provided at its lower end with a rearwardly extending transverse lug 33 adapted to engage within the transverse groove 34 with which the rear end of said lower limb is provided. I prefer to form said groove by providing the rear end of said lower limb 12 with an upturned preferably integral portion 35,
having at its upper end a forwardly extended flange 36. In preferable construction the rear face of the connecting member 13 is provided with " lateral reinforcing flanges 37, 37, and the rear end of the lower limb 12 is preferably provided with the reinforcing flange 38. It will be understood that the pocket 39 'withnn the draft yoke is adapted to receive a draft gear therein.
It will be app-parent that on rearward movement of-lhedi'aw'bar the butt thereof may slide reaiwardly within the yoke, and on forward movement will draw the yoke forwardly by reason of the interengagement of the gibs of the. yoke with the shoulders of the draw bar. To remove the draw bar from the yoke when/the draft rigging of which the same are a part are mounted be tween the draft sills of a car the bolt 29 is removed, and the 'key wardly from the hollow head, dropping the forward end of the yoke to the lowerportion of the hollow opening of the yoke head,
whereupon the upper shoulder 9 of thedraw bar will disengage from the upper gib 14 of the yoke, and sufiicient space will beprovided between the upper gib and the lower gib 40 of the detachable limb of the yoke to permit the draw bar to be drawn forwardly and removed. Meanwhile a draft gear within the yoke .may remain therein until the draw bar is replaced, as may be desired, or if it is desired to remove the draft gear from the yoke the same may be done by moving the detachable limb of the yoke rearwardly, and dropping thesame after the key 22 and bolt 29 have been removed. On replacing the draw bar within the yoke the same is passed through the forward openin of the yoke between the gibs there of whi e the detachable member is resting within the hollow head of the upper member, and thereupon the taper key 22 is 1nserted underneath the forward portion of the detachable limb, and between it and the inner lower face of the hollow? head, and driven into position, thus liftin the draw bar into position with the shoul ers thereof in engagementback of the gibs of the limbs ofthe yoke, and the taper key secured 1n po- 7 bination, a draw bar, a key, and a draft yoke 22 withdrawn forsition by through.
I claim 1. In railway car draft rigging, the combination with a draw bar, of a draft yoke comprising a limb having an integral band surrounding the draw bar and a detachable limb, of a key to secure one end of said detachable limb within said band. 2. In railway car draft rigging, the combination with a draw bar, of a draft yoke having a pair of limbs, one of said limbs being provided with an integral band to re-- ceive the draw bar and a detachable limb, of a key to secure one end of said detachable limb within said band, said key being tapered to wedge said detachable limb against the draw bar. 3. In a railway car draft rigging, in comm'eans of the bolt passing therehaving a pair of limbs, one of said limbs being provided with a band to surround the draw-bar, the other. limb being detachable, and said key being adapted to be received in a forward opening of, said band to hold the detachablelimb to the draw bar; I M. In a draft rigging for railway cars, in
"combination. a draw bar, a key, and a draft yoke comprising a limb having a band integral therewith to,surround' the draw bar and detachable limb, the said detachable imb sing received within said band, and said key engaging between said limb and an internal fac of the band.
