Application. led .Tune 3,
To @ZZ whom t may concern.' Y
Be it known that I,`HARRY C. BUHoUr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Appliancesfor Railway-Cars; and I do hereby declare the clear, and exact description of the invention, such'aswill enable others skilled in the art to` which it appertains to make and use thesame.
My invention relates to draftappliances for railway cars and is especially.` designed to afford strong, durable and simple means for permitting a car coupler to be attached to` a draft yoke in a manner enablingthe coupler to swing laterally when the ,car` to whichit is attached passes around a curve. The primary object ofthe .invention is to afford a-construction of the character indicated iny which `the coupler is detachaloly connected to the yoke in. a manner rendering it capable of 4ready and easy removal and replacement in the event it is damaged or broken.
The principalwfeature of the invention,
generally stated, consists in detachably connecting the coupler and yoke through the instrumentality of a key which is-mounted on the yoke so as to be slidable downwardly in adirection obliquetofthe horizontal. A further feature of the invention consists iin employing a removable bearing membenas a portion ofithe means fordetachably connecting .the coupler and yoke, said bearing member being adapted to coperate with fthe obliquely slidable key andV being retained by the latter in assembled position.
In. the drawings illustrating. preferred embodiments of the. invention,Vv the .scope whereof is pointed out int-heclaims,
Figure 1.is a plan viewof. adraft appl1- vance embodying my invention, the forward end ofthe car. coupler being broken. away swing laterally. g'lVithingthe hood .and-.sup-y ported-on Ythe lowerv wall thereof .in spaced relation t0 the cnrvedlbearing shoulder T10,v is
and `portions of the yokebeing omitted.4

Fig. 7 is a view partly in plan and partly in section of amodified form of draft :appli- Ianceembodying my invention, the forward `end of the coupler and the rear-end of the .yoke vbeing omitted.
y Fig. 8 is a side elevation ofthe construction shown in Fig. 7, the draft yoke being in section.
Fig. 9vis a section on the line 9-9, Fig. 8. In the-construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to# 6 of the drawings the connected. draft members are a car coupler 1 and a draft kyokeZ.. The yoke is provided with parallel arms 3- which areunited at their rear ends by a transversely extending portion. 4, and it 1s also illustrated as provided with a The socket 7 in the hood ispreferably separated from the spacebetween the yoke arms -8 yfor receiving the forward cushioning'unit by a transversely extending wall 8 whichinltegrally unites .theyoke arms and is adapted .to' engage theforward end of the cushioning .-.unit. Where theadraft member or coupler 1 lis pivotally connected .to the yoke vthei fory.ward4r face 9 of the transverse `wall 8 .is preferably'eurvedcylindrically to afford an eX- .tended `.bearing for v receiving thel buing shocks that may be transmitted to the cou- .,pler in any :positionwhich the latter may .assume 1n serv1ce.
The yoke is *fashioned atAv its forward end within the hood .with arearwardly .facing :shoulder :or hearing -10 which, like the. buing face 9jofgthe yoke,may1,be cylindrically curvedvwhenlithe coupler.l 1 fis Vdesigned vto a y.removable bea-ring.. .member -11 havingY a rearwardly facing preferably cyl-indrically curved-bearing shouldenor face-212 which is` i ing face 12 with a shelf 13 which vextends rearwardly so as to engage the transverse wall 8 of the yoke and which furnishes a sup- Vport for the rear end of the draft member 1.
The forward end of the member 11 is provided with an overhanging wedge shaped portion 14 affording a shoulder 15 for the engagement of a key 16 which is mounted in the lower portion of the hood 6 so as to be slidable in a direction oblique to the horizontal and vertical.
The forward end of the yoke has a ke receiving recess 17 which extends oblique y to the horizontal and vertical and intersects the forwardly opening socket 7 of the hood 6. The key way 17 is open at its lower end to permit the removal of the key 16 which is slidably mounted therein; and in order to provide for the use of simple means fork maintaining the key in assembled position as well as to enable it to be driven out of the key way should it become jammed therein, the said key way 17 is preferably open at its upper end also. To maintain the key in assembled position it is preferred to employ a' locking bar or rod v18V which extends through the key 16 from end to end and is capable of freely rotating with respect thereto, the said locking'bar having its ends 19 bent so as to maintain Vits connection-with the -key and alsoto cause it to'have a bias to move under 'the influence of gravity to a position lin which its ends or arms 19 overlap the side walls of the hooded portion of the yoke, thus preventing movement of thevkey in the key way. Y
The stem of the coupler 1 is formed at its rear end with oppositely disposed projections which are adapted respectively to engage the bearing shoulder 10 formed integral with the yoke and the bearing shoulder 12 of the removable member 11. These bearing shoulders of the coupler are preferably constituted by cylindrical trunnions 20 whose curvature corresponds to that of the bearing faces 9, 10 and 12 with which they enga e. I e
'he modified form of construction illustrated in Figs. 7, 8 and 9l isidentical with that illustrated inthe otherfiigures of the drawings and heretofore described except that the stem of the coupler 21 is connected to the yoke 2 through the intervention of a draft member 22 and a key 23 which extends through said coupler stem and draft member. Zr1`he features of construction which are alike in fboth forms of my invention have been indicatedby corresponding reference numerals.
The draft member 22 is provided at its rear end with oppositely disposed cylindri- 'cal trunnions 20'which are adapted to cooperate with the correspondingly curved bearings 9, 10 and 12, and at its forward end is` preferably fashioned with slotted arms 24 way.
ybetween which the rear end of the stem of the coupler 21 is adapted to be received. The inner ends of the arms 24;- are preferably united by transversely extending webs 25 so as to 'form a socket for receiving the rear end of the coupler stem; and said draft member 22 is alsor preferably provided with a face 26 which engages the rear end of the coupler stem and receivesy the buliing shocks communicated from the coupler.
In assembling-the structure illustrated in Figs.' 1 to 6, inclusive, the rear end of the stem of the coupler 1 is inserted in the hood 6 and is then elevated until its upper trunnion `2O is'in assembled relation with the curved bearingv face 10 of the yoke. The removable bearing member 11 is then inserted in the socket of the hood and pushedjrearwardly therein beneath the coupler` until its bearing face 12 engaged the lower trunnion 2O on the coupler stem. The key 16 is then .inserted in the key way 17 in front of the shoulder 1 5 of the removable bearing member, thus preventing forward movement of the latter and thereby completing the attachment of the coupler to the yoke. When the'keyv 16is in assembled position the locking bar 18 is allowed to rotate until it is in locked position. WithV the exception that it is necessary to connect'the draft members 21 and 22 by the key 24, the assembly of the modified form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 7, 8 and 9 is performed in the same l. claim K f Y 1. Ina railway draft appliance, the combination with a coupler, kof a yoke, and means for ,detachably .connecting said coupler and yoke, said vconnecting means involving a key mounted on said yoke so as to be slidable transversely of the yoke and in a rectilinear direction oblique to the Vhorizontal and vertical.4 y
2. In a railway `draft appliance, the 'combination with a yoke, of a draft member, and Y means for detachably connecting said ldraft member and yoke, said means involving a key which is downwardly movable transversely of the yoke and in a right line oblique-to the horizontal to" permit said draft member to 'be detached from said yoke.
3. In a railway draft appliance, the combination with a` yoke having a hooded forward end formed with a 'forwardly opening socket and provided with a key receiving recess transversely intersecting said socket, of a removable bearing member, a draft member having a portion adapted to enter said socket, and means for detachably condraft member to be withdrawn from Said socket of the yoke.
