JOHN F. OCONNOR, or onIoAeo, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO w. n. MINER comm Y, or (lllll'JAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
v DRAW-BAR -AND YOKE CONNECTIQN- FOR RAILWAY DRAFT-RIGGING.
concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. O'CONN R, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draw-Bar and Yoke Connections forRailway Draft-Rigging, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for connecting the draw bar of car cou lers to the yoke.
eretofore the draw bar strap or yoke has ordinarily been connected to the rear end of the draw bar of the coupler by one or more vertical rivets assing through the draw bar and yoke, ant? difficulty is experienced in practical operation from the rivets shearing under pulling or bufiing strains, and because when the parts are thus riveted together it requires time and labor to cut the rivets when necessary to remove and replace the coupler or draw bar.
The object of my invention is to provide a draw bar and yoke connection of a strong,
simple, efficient and durable connection, which will enable the connectin rivets to be done away with, and which wil at the same time give much additional strength, rigidity and security, while enabling the draw bar and yoke to be quickly and conveniently disconnected when removal, replacement or repairs are necessary.
My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result as herein shown and described and more particularly specified in the claims, the same consisting essentially, in connection with the draw bar, its yoke and the front draft rigging follower, in a connecting sleeve or bandsurrounding the rear end of the draw bar and the front end of the draw bar yoke, and abutting at its front end against shoulders on the draw bar, and at its rear end against the front follower, the draw bar and yoke being provided with interengaging shoulders to prevent movement of one in respect to the other when surrounded by said connecting band'or sleeve.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a.
part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in longitudinal section, of a draw bar and yoke connection embodying my invention; Fi 2 is a detail plan view;
' Fig. 3'is a vertica cross section on line 33 detail horizontal secof Fig. 1; an. Fig. 4 is a Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 21, 1907.
Patented April 20, 1909.-
Serial No. 398,346.
tion on line 4=4 of Fig. 1, the follower being shown in Lplan.
In the 'rawing A represents the draw bar, B the yoke, C the front follower of the draft rigging and.]) the connecting sleeve or band surrounding the front end of the draw bar yoke and the rear end of the draw bar. The draw bar A is provided at its rear end, on its upper and lower faces, with a groove a forming front and rear shoulders at a? to receive and engage coo crating gibs or shoulders I) at the front end 0 the upper and lower limbs of the draw bar yoke or strap The draw bar A is also provided on its upright sides or faces with shoulders or abutments a' for the front end of the connecting sleeve or band D to abut a ainst. At its rear end the connecting sleeve abuts against the front follower C of the draft ri 'ging- The connectin sleeve or band D is shaped to snugly fit an surround the draw bar and yoke; and, when driven or forced into lace after the draw bar and Iyoke amp are assemb ed, it will snugly bind and c the parts'together. While the fit of the con necting sleeve should be tight and snug so as.
to require forcing or driving to slip it Into place, it need not however be so tight a fit as to require shrinking or to interfere with the quick and ready disconnection of the arts by simply first removing the front fol ower and other driving or orcing the comiecting sleeve backward over the draw bar yoke.
The shoulders a on the upright sides or faces of the draw bar for the connecting sleeve to abut against, are preferably formed by simply providing the draw bar with a reduced portion (L at its rear end in horizontal dimension. v
E re resents the draft rigging spring and F F friction blocks, G a friction shell or case, H the rear follower andK K front and rear sto s for the followers.
claim:
1. The combination with a draw bar, of a draw bar yoke having upper and lower limbs embracing the draw-bar between them, the front draft rigging follower, a connecting sleeve surroundlng the yoke and draw bar, the draw bar and yoke having interengaging shoulders, and the draw bar having shoulders for the front end of the connecting sleeve to abut against, said connecting sleeve abutting stantially as specified.
arts of the draft rigging and then 2. mmbin 1 a draw bar and its yoke the yaks iawe limbs embracring the bar betwaen them, wnnect ing siee m same-Landing Ina rear and of the I out and of $512 oke, the
draw bar ti draw aim ake having ink gaging Shoulders thedmw baa: hrs a a sh0u1- rant 0f the -lee :r v to abut .agsfms't, sub as specifigd.
3. The mmomaiin with. he draw barand bar between them, of a connecting band surrounding the drawbar and yoke, substantially as specified.
