DIYRAFT-RIIGGING FOR RAILWAY-TENDERS OH'OTHER CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 1906.
To aLZ whom it may concern.
Be .it known thatI, JOHN R. MITcHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cookand State of Illiprovement in Draft-Rigging for Railwayienders or other Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in railway draft-rigging. v I
The object of my invention is to'provide'a convertible draft-rigging, one in which the side castings may be used with cushioning or resisting devices of diiferent kinds or types, as occasion may require-such, for example, as tandem springs, on the one hand, or single springs and friction devices, on the other hand.
' My invention consists inth'e means I employ to practically accom lish this object or result as herein shown or dhscribed.
. In theacco'mpanying drawings, formin a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a piim in horizontal section, of a draftrigging em odying my invention. Fig. 2 isa vertical section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
- Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the insert or converslon piece of one of the side castings,
and Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 ofFig. 4.
In the drawings, A A represent the center sills of a tender or other railway-car; A, the
' front or end sill; A, the buffer-plate, and A the carry-iron.
B is the coupler; B, the draw-bar; B, the draw-bar strap or yoke.
C C C C are the followers, and D D and E E tandem-arranged twin, springs. Each of the springs preferably has a sma ler spring nesting within it.
F F are the side castings or sto -plates, secured to the draft timbers or s1 ls A A by horizontal and upright bolts f f Each of the side castings F has a front shoulder or stopf and a rear shoulder or stopf. for the front and rear followers to abut against, and forming a chamber or recess between them to receive a removable insert or conversion piece G', having a stop for the two intermediate followers C and C to abut against.
1 Each of the insert or conversion pieces G has a horizontally-projecting lower flange g, I
adaptedto fit under the horizontally-projecting lower flange f of the side casting F,
, which itself fits under the center sill or draftnois, have invented a new and useful Imront stop f 2 and at its rear end against the rear stop f of the side plate or stop-casting F andis also additionally secured in place by bolts 9 which extend through the sillA and side casting F. The recess, space, or chamber between the front and rear stops f 2 and f of the side casting F is adapted to receive -any other suitable type of cushioning or resisting device than the twin tandem springs illustrated in the drawings when the removable insert or conversion pieces G are removed. Y
As illustrated in the drawings, the side castings F F are of atype adapted to receive, when the insert or conversion pieces G Gare removed, one well-known form of draft a pliances or cushioning devices and may e readily and quickly converted into form for use'with the particular type of draft appliance or'cushioning devices illustrated in the drawings by simply puttin in place the insert or conversion pieces G as shown in the drawings.
As illustrated in the drawings, the side castings F F- are shown as cast integrally with each other or in one piece, this integral construction being sometimes used in some kinds of draftrigging-.
1. In a draft-rigging, the combination with side castings having each front and rear stops or shoulders with a recess between them and rovided with upper integral guides and ower removable guides for the followers, of removable insert or conversion pieces each fitting in the recess of its side casting and abutting atits eiids against the stops or shoulders thereof, andprovided with a stop or shoulder to serve as an intermediate stop for a tandem or converted draft-rigging, subfront and rear stops and provided each with stantially as specified. I a stop or shoulder, substantially as specified.
2. In a draft-riggim the combination with Y J convertible side castings having integral Join MIICHELL' 5 front and rear stops and integral upper Witnesses:
guides for the followers, of removable insert GERTRUDE E. BOLGIANO,
or conversion pieces abutting against said H. M. MUNDAY.
