PATENTED MAY 9, 1905.
J. F. OCONNOR. DRAFT RIGGING FOR RAILWAY CARS.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.19. 1905.
WITNESSES:
STATES Patented May 9, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. OCONNOR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO W. H. MINER COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
DRAFT-RIGGING FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,293, dated May 9, 1905.
Application filed January 19, 1905. Serial No. 241,721.
To (LI/Z whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft-rigging for railway-cars.
My invention consists in providing the draft-rigging side plates or stop-castings, which extend to the front part of the car, with seats or. grooves to receive removable and replaceable bearing-pieces in connection with removable and replaceable bearing-pieces fitting in said seats or grooves and supported by the carry-iron, upon which the coupler draw-bar rests, and operating to limit the lateral or swinging movement of the draw-bar, so that the wear and abrasion incident to the draw striking against the same may be taken by these removable and replaceable bearingpieces. When these bearing-pieces thus become so worn or abraded as to permit too much lateral movement of the draw-bar, they can be readily removed and replaced by similar new bearing-pieces, thus greatly increasing the life and durability of the side plates or stop-castings.
My invention further consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown or described.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in vertical section, of a draftrigging embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view partly in horizontal section, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the removable or replaceable bearingpieces.
In the drawings, A A represent the center sills or draft-sills of a car, to which the side plates or stop-castings are secured. A is the front or cross sill, A the buffer-block, A the buffer-plate, and A' the carry-iron, all of these parts being of any ordinary, suitable, or
desired construction, and B is the coupler having the customary forked draw-head b and pivotal knuckle Z).
B is the draw-bar, and B the draw-bar strap or yoke.
The side plates or stop-castings D extend to the front end of the car and are furnished with the customary stops or shoulders (Z (Z 5 5 d d for the followers C C C O to abut against.
E e are tandem-arranged springs located between each pair of followers.
Each of the side plates or stop-castings I) is provided at its front end with upright grooves or seats (Z (Z to receive the upright edges f f of the removable or replaceable bearing-pieces F, which are preferably of substantially the form shown in the drawings-- that is to say, of a segmental hollow-square form with rounded corners, so that the same may surround and inclose the inner front corner D of the stop-casting D, which lies between the upright grooves or seats of" d The removable bearing-pieces F may be readily removed and replaced by simply removing the carry-iron, which is removably secured in place by bolts a, having threaded nuts a and keys a By this means the draft-rigging itself is relieved from the wear and abrasion due to both longitudinal and lateral movement of the draw-bar and its engagement with the guides or bearings which limit its lateral or swinging movement to guide its front end in its longitudinal movement.
I claim- 1. In a draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar and side plates or stoyrcastings provided near the front end thereof with 8 5 grooves or seats to receive removable bearingpieces, of removable bearing-pieces fitting in the grooves or seats of said side plates or stopcastings for the front end of the draw-bar to bear against, substantially as specified.
2. In a draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar and carry-iron, of side plates or stop-castings extending to the front end of the car and provided with upright grooves or seats, and removable bearing-pieces having l in adjacent to the front inner corners thereof, movable bent bearing-pieces embracing the inner front corners of the side plates or stopcastings and having edges fitting in said upright grooves or seats, and a removable carryiron supporting and holding said removable bearing-pieces in place, substantially as specified.
JOHN F. OCON N OR.
