PATENT OFFICE.
wILLIAM MINEH, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AssIGNOR- To w. H. MINEH COMPANY, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OE ILLINOIS.
vTANDElllI-SFFHNGl DRAFT-HIGGING FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 769,225, dated September 6, 1904.
Application filed February 24, 1904. `Serial No. 195,012. (No. model.) i
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MINER, `a citizen of the United States, residing' in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inventedanew and useful Improvement in Tandem-Spring Draft-Riggings for Railway- Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My. invention relates to improvements in tandem-spring draft-rigging for railway-cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a tandem-spring' draft-rigging for railway-cars of a simple, strong, safe, and durable construction and composed of few parts.
My invention consists in the novel construction of parts and devices' and in the novel combinations ofl parts and devices herein shown and described and by which this object or result ispractically accomplished.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section ofA a tandem-spring draft-rigging embodying my invention. Fig.
2 is a plan View, partly in horizontal section,
on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 8 of Fig. 2. fFig. 4. is a det-ail bottom view of the stop-casting. Fig. 5 is an renlarged detail section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 6, and Fig. 6 is a section on line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
In the drawings, A A represent the longitudinal center sills or frame-pieces of the car, the same being illustrated as of ordinary steelframe construction.
` connecting rivets or bolts F5.
A is the front sill;A2, the buffer-plate; A3,
the carry-Iron.
'B is the coupler, B the draw-bar, B2 the draw-bar extension or yoke, these parts being of any ordinary or suitable construction.
C c and C c are longitudinally arranged tandem-springs arranged between the two pairs of followers D D and D2 D3.
F is the stop-casting, the same comprising two integral side plates F F, united by an upper connecting-web F2 and having 'flanges fFiFi at rightangles to each other t`o fit against the faces or fianges of the center sills AA and to which the stop-casting-is secured Iby The stop-casting F is also provided with a transverse flange F6 at its front end, to which bolts F8 extend, connecting it with the cross-sill A and buffer-plate A2. The. stop-casting F is furnished with four pairs ofshoulders or stops ff, ff, fzfi, andfBfBfor the followers to abut against. The two middle stops or shoulders j" f 2 have a connecting bridge or web ff. The two inwardly-extended webs or projections f f4 serve as a guide for the drawbar yoke or extension B2, while permitting the draw-bar to have the necessary laterallyswinging movement. The stop-casting F is rigidly secured to the sills A A by bolts or rivets l f -G G are the lower removable guides, upon which lthe followers rest and reciprocate. These guides G G are secured to the stopcasting F by short removable bolts g -c/,which 4 iitinlaterally-extendingslotsj16 inthe feet f of the stop-casting F and' which bolts pass through holes g in the removable guideplates G. The feet f on the stop-casting have rectangular guide-ribs f8 to prevent the bolts from turning'as the nuts g? are screwed home. A downwardly-projecting iiange fi' on one of the feet f 7 engages the edge of the guide-plate G, and thusprevents the guideplates G andthe bolts ,g from moving laterally after the bolts have once been inserted laterally in place and the nuts thereon screwed up. :f
As the two side plates F F are made in one integral piece on casting'with the connecting-web F2, greatv additionalstrength, rigidity, andsafetyare secured,- while at the same time the parts or.piecesof the draftrigging as a whole are'reduced in number.
I claiml. In a tandem-spring draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar and draw-bar eX- tension, of a pair of tandem-arranged springs, two pairs of followers and a single stop-casting having two integral side plates, each with upright integral stops orshoulders for the followers, and each-having a horizontally-projecting flange and an upwardly-projecting iiange, substantiallyas specifiedlx' 2. In a tandem-spring draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar and draw-bar eX- tension, of a pair of tandem-arranged springs, two pairs of followers and a single stop-easting having two integral side plates, eaeh with upright integral stops or shoulders for the followers, and eaeh having an upwardly-projeeting flange and a horizontal flange fitting against and secured to the draft-sills and removable guide-plates to support and guide the followers, substantiall7 as specified.
3. In a tandem-spring draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar and draw-har extension, of a pair of tandem-arranged springs, two pairs of followers and a single stop-east ing having two integral side plates, eaeh with integral stops or shoulders for the followers, and removable guide-plates to support and guide the followers, said stop-Casting having laterally-slotted feet and short Connectingbolts fitting in thelateral slots of said feet for removably securing said guide-plates to the stop-casting, substantially as specified.
4. In a tandem-spring draft-rigging, the combination with the draw-bar, draw-bar extension, tandem springs and followers, of a stop-casting having two integral side plates eaeh furnished with stops for the followers, removable guide-plates to support the followers, and short eonneeting-bolts extending through said guide-plates and fitting in lateral slots in the stop-Casting, substantially as specified.
In a tandem-spring draft-rigging, the combination with the draw-bar, draw-bar eX- tension; tandem springs and followers, of a Stop-casting having two integral side plates each furnished with stops for the followers,re movable guide-plates to support the followers, and short Connecting-l )olts extending through said guide-plates and fitting in lateral slots in the stop-casting, said stop-casting being also provided with ribs to reeeive the heads of said connecting-bolts and prevent the same from turning, substantially as specified.
6. In a tandem-spring draft-rigging, the Combination with the draw-bar, draw-bar extension, tandem springs and followers, of a stop-casting having two integral side plates eaeh furnished with stops for the follo\vers,removable guide-plates to support the followers, and short connecting-bolts extending through said guide-plates and fitting in lateral slots in the stop-Casting, said stop-casting having fianges engaging said guide-plates to prevent lateral movements of the bolts or guide-plates after the bolts are serewed home, substantially as specified.
'7. In a tandem-spring draft-rigging, the Combination with a drawbar and d raw-bar extension, of a pair of tandem-arranged springs, two pairs of followers and a single stop-easting having two integral side plates, each with integral stops or shoulders for the followers, said stop-casting having a transverse fiange at its front end, and bolts connecting the same with the cross-sill, substantially as specified.
