SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. l792,229, dated J une 13, 1905. Application filed February 17,1905. Serial No. 245,995.
To n/ZZ 71;/10727, it muy concern.:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft-rigging for railway-cars, and more particularly to tandem-spring draft-rigging.
My invention consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations 'of parts and devices herein shown and described, and specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in vertical longitudinal section, of a tandem-spring draft-rigging embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View, partly in horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. I is a perspective view of the filler and tie casting bar or block, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lower removable guide and connecting plate.
In the drawings, A A represent the longitudinal center sills of the car-frame; A', the front sill; A2, the draft-timbers; A3, the buffer-block, and A4 the carry-iron.
B is the coupler, B the draw-bar, B2 the draw-bar extension, the same being preferably in the form of a yoke or strap and secured to the draw-bar by bolts L. The drawbar and draw-bar extension have shoulders or abutments L If t to bear against the followers C.
E E are tandem-arranged springs interposed between each pair of followers C, there also being preferably smaller springs e e inside the larger springs E.
D D are the side plates or stop-castings, the same having shoulders or stops d CZ (Z2 for the followers C to abut against and each having an upper integral guide or ange (Z3 for the followers. Each of the side plates or stopcastings D is also provided with an external horizontal flange al* to fit Linder the drafttimbers A2 and through which flanges Zl upright bolts (Z5 pass to secure the side plates or stop-castings D to the draft-timbers and center sills. Horizontal bolts CZ also extend through the draft-timbers andthe side plates or stop-castings to further secure the same in place. Each of the side plates or stop-castings D is further provided with an extension D at its front end, which extends to the front of the car and projects under the front sill A and buffer-block A3 and the bottom plate A5 of the buffer-block. This extension D of the side plate or stop-casting D is provided with a shoulder (Z7 to accommodate the bottom plate A5 of the buffer-block and with an integral projection (Z8 on its upper side, having a shoulder Z9 to fit and bear against the rear face of the front or cross sill A and furnished with a recess Zw to receive the filler and tie casting block or bar F, the projection Z8 having also a shoulder K12 to abut against said filler and tie casting F. The center sill A is notched or recessed to receive the projection Z8 and the filler and tie casting F. Upright bolts Z13 extend through the buffer-block and carry-iron and the front ends of the side-plate or stop-casting extensions D. Similar upright bolts d extend through the front sill A and these extensions D of the side plates or stop-castings D, and upright bolts du extend through the filler and tie casting F and side plates D.
G is the lower guide and connecting plate, the same being removably secured to the side plates D by short bolts g, which extend through the lower horizontal anges d, with which the side plates D are provided. This plate G serves as a lower guide for the followers and also as a connecting-plate for the two side plates or stop-castings D D. The plate G is provided with marginal anges g, which embrace the outer edges of the stop-casting flanges (Zw. This guide and connecting plate G is further provided with downwardlyprojecting' flanges g2, forming a channel and guide g3 for the draw-bar extension B2.
The extensions D of the side plates or stopcastings D have shoulders d, which receive and abut against the front ends of the drafttimbers A2, and also laterally projecting brackets (Z l to receive the truss-rods H, which are thus connected directly to the side-plate or stop-casting extensions, thus affording a further and additional anchorage for the side plates or stop-castings. By this construction the side plates or stop-castings are very firmly and rigidly secured and anchored to the carframework both against pulling' and bufiing strains, and the draft-rigging as a whole is rendered very strong, safe, and reliable.
I claimn 1. In a draft-rigging, the combination With the draw-bar, draxvbar extension, tandem springs and followers, of the center sills, draft timbers, cross-sill and buffer-block and a pair of' side plates or stop-castings, each having stops for the followers to abut against, and provided each with an extension at its front end extending` under the cross-sill, a bufen block` upright bolts extending through said draw-bar extensions and the front sill and buffer-block, each of said side plates or stopcastings havingcon its upper side a projection furnished with a shoulder abutting against the rear face of the front or cross sill, and said projection having a shouldered recess to receive a filler and tie casting, a filler and tie casting fitting in said shouldered recess and connecting said side plates or stop-castings, and a lower removable guide and connecting plate removably7 secured to and connecting the side plates or stop-castings, substantially as specified.
2. In a draft-rigging for railway-cars, the combination with a pair of' side plates or stopcastings 'furnished each on its upper side with a projection having a shouldered recess, of a filler and tie casting fitting in said shouldered recess and extending across and connecting said side plates or stop-castings, substantially as specified.
3. In a draft-rigging for railway-cars, the combination with the draft-timbers and front or cross sill, of side plates or stopcastings furnished each With an extension extending under and bolted to the cross-sill, and provided each on its upper face with a shouldered projection and a filler and tie casting or bar fitting in said shouldered recesses and extend- 1 ing across and connecting the side plates or stop-castings, substantially as specified.
4. In a draft-rigging for railway-cars, the combination with the draft-timbers and front or cross sill, of side plates or stop-castings furnished each with an extension extending under and bolted to the cross-sill, and provided each on its upper face with a shouldered projection and a filler and tie casting or bar fitting in said shouldered recesses and extending across and connecting the side plates or stop-castings, said extensions ofthe side plates or sto p-castings having lateral fianges or shoulders to receive the tie-rods, and tie-rods connected thereto, substantially as specified.
5. In a draft-rigging for railway-cars, the combination with the center sills, of side plates or stop-castings each furnished with a shouldered projection on its upper side, said center sills having shouldered recesses to receive and bear against said shouldered projections on the upper side of the side plates or stop-castings, said shouldered projections on the upper side of the side plates or stop-castings having shouldered recesses to receive the filler and tie casting, and a filler and ltie casting fitting in said recesses and extending across and connecting said side plates or stop-castings, substantially as specified.
6. In a draft-rigging Jfor railway-cars, the combination with the center sills, of' side plates or stop-castings each furnished with a shouldered projection on its upper side, said center sills having shouldered recesses to receive and bear against said shouldered projections on the upper side ofl the side plates or stop-castings, said shouldered projections on the upper side of the side plates or stop-castings having shouldered recesses to receive the filler and tie casting, and a filler and tie casting fitting in said recesses and extending across and connecting said side plates or stop-castings, and a Vfront or cross sill abutting directly against said filler and tie casting, substantially as specified.
