UNITED STATES WILLIAM H. MINER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO w. H. MINER Patented April 26, 1904.
PATENT i OFFICE.
COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
DRAFT-RIGGING FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 758,144, dated April 26, 1904.
Application filed May 9, 1903. Serial No. 156,339, (No model.)
To all whont it near concern.-
Be'it known that I, WILLIAM H. MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicage, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement' in Draft-Rigging for Railway-Oars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto improvements in draft-rigging for railway-cars, and more particularly to improvements in tandem-spring draft-rigging designed for use upon modern heavy cars' and in which the draft-rigging is subjected to very heavy blows or strains. Heretofore in such draft-rigging difficulty has been experienced by reason of the side plates or stop-castings, or the connections thereof with the center sills or draft-timbers, giving Way. under the extremely heavy blows or strains to which the same are subjected in use upon the large modern cars carrying heavy loads and coupled in long trains.
The object of my invention is to'provide a simple, practical, efficient, and economical means for overcoming this diflioulty and by which the draft-rigging as a whole and its connection with or anchorage to the center sills or draft-timbers are greatly strengthened, thus adding greatly to the durability and safety of the draft-rigging and of the car.
My invention consists in the meansfl employ to practically accomplish this important object or resultthat is to say, it consists, in
or stop-castings will abut-directly against these extension-anchors or filler-blocks, and thus be given the additional strength or resistance due thereto and to their connection with the bodybolster or transom, thus not only greatly strengthening the draft-rigging, but matezontal section.
rially relieving the center sills ordr'aft-timbers themselves from excessive strain and disor stop-castings at their rear ends are firmly bolted and secured to these extension-anchors or tiller-blocks the draft-rigging is similarly strengthened to resist pulling strains. 7
My invention also consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown or described.
In theaccompanymg drawings, formlng a part of this specification, Figure 1 1s aside elevation of a railway draft-rigging embody-7.,
ing my invention, showing the body-bolster and transverse beams of the car in cross-sec tion. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in hori- Fig. 3 is'a cross-section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. dis across-section online 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side eleva- ;tion illustrating the application of my invention to a car furnished with draft-timbers. Fig. 6 is a plan view, partlyin horizontal section, of the construction shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a cross-section on line 7 7 of Fig. 5, and Fig. 8' is a cross-section on .line 8 8 of Fig. 5.
In the drawings, A A represent the center sills of the car; A, the front sill; A the buffer-block; A the buffer-plate, and A the carry-iron.
Bis the coupler, B the drawbar,.and B the draw-bar extension, the same being preferably in the form of a yoke or strap, as illustrated, and secured tothe draw-bar by bolts 6. The draw-bar and draw-bar extension have shoulders or abntments b 6 6 to'bear against the followers O.
E E are the tandem-arranged springs interposed between each pair of'followers, the
same preferably having smaller springs c 6 inside the larger springs.
reciprocate between, the upper guides d being is firmly secured to the center sill by bolts d,
extending horizontally through the center sills, and also by bolts 61?, extending vertically through the center sills. Each of the side plates or stop-castings D is further. provided with a transverse flange or shoulder 0Z abutting against the front sill A of the car, and with upright integral flanges d 03, through which bolts (Z extend to further secure the stop-casting to the center sill.
F F are the extension-anchors or fillerblocks connected at their front ends by bolts f and interengaging hooks f f with the rear ends of the side plates or stop-castings D and firmly secured to the center sills by bolts f f and extending through the body-bolster or transom G of the car between the upper and lower plates g 9 thereof and having a shouldered connection or abutment f with the transom or body-bolster, so that a portion of the strain of the draft-rigging in both pulling and bufling may be transmitted directly to the transom or body-bolster of the car, thus in part relieving the center sills or draft-timbers and the bolts for securing the draft-rigging thereto from strain. The extension-anchors or filler-blocks F fit underneath the center sills and are directly in line with the side plates or stop-castings D or the horizontal web or flange (1 thereof, as will be readily understood from the drawings.
The bolt f, by which the extension-anchors or filler-blocks F are secured to the side plates or stop-castings D, are longitudinal bolts extending in the direction of the parts connected and pass through abutting transverse flanges f and d on the extension-anchors and side plates, respectively. The connecting-bolts f being longitudinal are thus subjected to no shearing strain or action.
In Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8 I have illustrated my invention as applied to a car having in addition to the center sills A A the customary draft-timbers A A secured beneath the center sills. In this form of my invention the extension-anchors or filler-blocks F F, as in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4:, are directly behind and in line with the side plates or stop-castings and their front ends connected to the rear ends of said side plates or stop-castings, as before described; but in this modification (illustrated in Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8) the extension-anchors or filler-blocks F F fit against the inside faces of the draft-timbers instead of against the underside of the center sills, and the same are secured to the center sills through the draft-timbers, which are bolted or connected to the center sills in the usual manner.
