Application filed May s, 1997. Serial No. 373,315.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be-it known that I, WILLIAM P. BETTEN;
DORF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Daven ort, in the county of Scott'and State of owa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underframes for Cars, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
My invention relates to underframes for cars, particularly those most if not all of the parts of which are made of metal.
The object of my invention is to simplify and reduce the cost of the underfram'e, while at the same time strengthening it, and increasing its durability, and -a further object is to transmit the stress and strain of the draft on the car from end to end thereof in Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
the axial plane of the coupling. This I accomplish'by the means hereinafter fully described and as particularly pointed out in the claims. I
In thedrawingsc-Figure l is a longitudinal central section through a portioniof the underframe of a car embodying my improvements. Fig. 2is a plan view of the same. Fig. i is a transverse vertical section of a part of said underframe taken on dotted line 4, 4, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a-similar transverse section-thereof taken on dotted line 5, 5, Fig. 2. Fig. dis a detail view showing one end of the center-sill drawn to a slightly larger scale. Fig. 7 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 5 disclosing modified means for conn eating the needlebeams-to the side-sills.
My improved underframe comprises sidesills A, A, preferably, made of channel-beams,
and end-sills preferably made by bending the ends B, B, of said channel-beams inwardly toward each otheruntil they meet in a-pl'ane alining with the center of width of the car, at
,whichfpoint their ends are secured together by means of a'suitable plate a." I prefer to bend these portions. B, B, of said channelbeams so as .to bulge the central portion of the end-sills longitudinally to form an advancedbufling portion B, and I floor over this projecting buffing portion B by a floorplate a, substantially as shown in the draw- I with longitudinally elongated ings.
h wc jandsof metal-.temstakes .9, ,9,-
The body-bolster G, preferably, consists of l which are riveted or otherwise secured to the inner surface of the side-sills and'haye their lower ends extending below the said side-sills and connected to the ends of the bolsterG by plates g, g. This manner of connecting the ends of the body-bolsterto the underframe brings the upper flanged edge of the,
same below the plane of the upper flanged edges of the side-sills, and permits the use of longitudinally disposed strip; h for the floor of the body of the car. etween the corner-stakes of the body of the car the endsills are reinforced by stakes II, thatare, preferably, made of tee-metal shape, and have their lower end extend below the floor and bent horizontally in the direction of the length of the ear. These lower horizontal extensions II of stakes II extend to .and are connected by rivets or otherwise to the web of the bodybolster, and form braces between said bolster and the end-sills and greatly strengthen and reinforce the construction of the ends of the underframe.
Extendinglengthwise the car from end to end of the same is a single center-sill W, which is, preferably, of a depth extending from the underside of-the floor of the car to a suitable point below the lower flange of the body-b0lster. Its web is provided with a suitable transverse opening G through which the body oolster extends and said, bolster is shearingly connected thereto by angles I, I, below its upper flanges and above the bolster opening, and by means of a U- shape eenteringframe J the upper ends of whose parallel branches are riveted to the lower flanges of the bolster. The bend of this centering-frame is formed into a suitable circular boss j that enters and is journaled in the usual bearings in the center of length of the truck bolster.
In gondola cars of the type to which my improvements are applied, the plane of the line of draft is usually below the lower flange of the end-sill. In order, therefore, to accommodate the draft-gear in cars in which the single center-sill extends'clear to said verse .rectangu ar opening.
. tively connecting the same to said straps,
In cars where the single center-sill extends over the body-bolsters, but does not extend quite to the end-sills, I suitably'secure to each end of said center-sill a frame-work L, preferably, made ofcast steel. The portion of this frame-work secured to the extremitythe draft gear. 1 In the rear portion of framework L adjacent to the center-sill, a transverse rectangular opening is made, and the buffer-springs m are placed in this opening, and bear against the usual spring followerplates (not shown). The shank of the coupler K extends under the end-sill and is supported by a stirrup K of the usual construction secured to and depending from said end-sill, and its rear portion has secured thereto in front of the shoulder (made by reducing the height of the frame-work L), the straps M, which latter extend rearwardl on either side of the spring m and have their rear portions N constructed so as to engage the aforesaid spring buffer-plates, in the usual manner. I p
lThe construction of the straps M and the rear portion N thereof, and the arrangement of the buffer-spring and devices for operaare the same in the construction shown in Fig. 6 of the drawingsas in Fig. 1.
Between the body-bolsters the single I- beam center-sill is provided between its upper and lower flanges with openings '0 through which transverse needle-beams V extend, which latter, preferably, have their ends connected to the lower extensions of the sidc-stakes n, n, of the car-body, by plates 0, 0, in th same manner as do stakes g, g. In addition to these stakes the carbody is, preferably, providedwith a series of side-stakes P, which alternate therewith and have their lower ends extend down be-" add to the transverse strength of the under- The lower and upper flanges of the frame. needle-beams are shearingly secured to the single center-sill by means of brackets r, r, and s, s, substantially as shown, but it is obvious that these brackets may be dispensed with if desired.
I do not desire to be confined to the use of the metal-plates a, and 0 for securing the ends of the body-bolster and the ends of the needle-beams to the side-sills of the underframe, but may, partichlarly when the stakes of the body are made of wood, connect said ends to cast metal sockets S that are secured to the inner surface of the side-sills,'and are adapted to receive the lower ends of the wooden-stakes T.
