Be it known that we, WILLIAM HUNTER EMEEroK, a citizen of the United States, residing in Osawatomie, in the county of Miami and State of Kansas, and PETER ALQUisT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in car frames, and more particularly. to improvements in means for re-movably connecting draft timbers or other parts to the center sills or other members of the car framework, and our present invention is an improvement upon the inventions forming the subject of our Patents Nos. 795,593 of July 25, 1905, and 819,047 and 819,048 of Way 1st, 1906.
The object of our present invention, is to provide a simple, strong, efficient and durable construction of parts and devices for removably connecting together the draft timbers and center sills of a car or other parts or members of the car frame-work without the use of long connecting bolts extending through the sills and draft-timbers or other parts connected, and by means of which such parts may be very rigidly and rmly connected together, and at the same time the one readily removed from the other.
Our invention consists in the novel construction of parts and devices, and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described, and more particularly speciiied in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in vertical longitudinal section showing a portion of a car ,frame to which our invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a cross section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail bottom view of the upper connecting plate and Fig. 7 is a detail plan view of the lower connecting plate. Figs. 6 and 7 show the meeting faces of the two connecting plates.
ln the drawing, we have illustrated our invention as applied or used for removably connecting the draft timbers of a railway car to the center sills thereof without the use of long connecting bolts extending through the draft timbers and center sills so that the draft timbers may be conveniently removed and replaced when required without interfering with the other parts of the car or its framework.
In the drawing, A represents the center sills and B the draft timbers or other parts or frame pieces to be removably connected. A1 is the front or end sill, A2 the buffer block,4 C the draw-bar, Cl the side plates or stop castings of the draft rigging secured to the draft timbers B, O2 the draft rigging springs and C3 the followers, these parts being all of any usual or customary construction. y
D and Dl are the upper and lower connecting plates, the former being rigidly secured by bolts F F to the center sill, and the latter by a bolt F1 to the draft timber. Any desired number of pairs of connecting plates may be employed between each draft timber and its sill or the other parts t'o be connected. The connecting plate D has on its under side at each end a circular recess d to receive the headf of the short connecting bolt F,` and the lower connecting plate D1 has a central recess or depression dlin its upper face to receive the head of the short connecting bolt Fl by which the plate DlL is connected to the draft timber. The upper connecting plate D has on its lower face a plurality of holesdz, preferably four in number and a pair of longitudinal flanges d3 between which the lower connecting plate D1 fits.
The lower connecting plate D1 has on its meeting face a plurality of lugs d4, preferably four in number which are preferably round in cross section, but slightly tapering or conical, and which iit in corresponding holes or recesses d2 in the upper connecting plate D. The longitudinal or side flanges d3 of the upper connecting plate D are furnished with transverse holes d registering with transverse holes Z7 in the lower connecting plate D1 through which holes the transverse connecting bolts G extend. By this improved construction, the transverse connecting bolts, it will be observed, extend through the body of one of the connecting plates instead of simply through lugs thereon and through continuous side flanges, which may be made of any length desired, instead of through short lugs on the other connecting plate,

. tapering, substantially thus adding materially to the strength, safety, security and rigidity of the union between the connecting plates and the draft timbers and sills or other members connected thereby.
The upper connecting block D is furnished with a recess d8, preferably about one quarl ter of an inch in depth, in which fits the lower connecting block D1 so that the lower connecting block thus fits within the upper connecting block and thereby in part relieves the lugs on the lower connecting block from shearing strain.
The fianges (Z3 .on the inner side of the connecting blocks D are inwardly offset so that the side plates or stop castings C1 of the Adraft rigging can, if desired, project above the draft timbers B and so that the heads of the connecting bolts G will not project beyond the inner faces of the draft timbers or center sills.
We claim z- 1. In a car frame, the combination with the center sills and draft timbers, of connecting plates secured to said sills anddraft timbers respectively, said connecting plates secured to the sills having each at its ends boltl head 'recesses and short bolts connecting the same to the sills, and said connecting plates secured to the draft timbers having each at its middle a bolt head recess and a short bolt connecting the same with the draft timber, one of said connecti'ng'plates having on its meeting face longitudinally extending side fianges or ribs yembracing the other plate, and said other connecting'plate having on its meeting face a plurality of lugs entering Aholes or recesses in said first mentioned plate, `and transverse connecting bolts extending through the body of one of said plates and the side fianges on the other, substantially as specified.
2. In a car frame, the combination with the center sills and draft timbers, of connecting plates secured to the said sills and draft timbers respectively, said connecting plates secured to the sills having each at its ends bolt head recesses and short bolts connecting the same to the sills, and said connecting plates secured to the draft timbers having each at its middle a bolt head recess and a short bolt connecting the same with the draft timber, oneof said connecting plates having on its meeting face longitudinally extending side flanges `or ribs embracing the other plate and said other connecting plate having on its meeting face a plurality of lugs entering holes or recesses in said first mentioned plate, and transverse connecting bolts extending vthrough the body of one of said plates and the side flanges on vthe other, the interfit-ting lugs and holes on said plates being slightly as specified.
3. The combination with two members to be removably connected together, of a pair l of connecting plates secured to said members respectively, one of vsaid plates having side fianges embracing the other plate, and conynecting .bolts extending through said side l flanges and the connecting plate embraced I thereby, substantially as specified.

5. The combination with two members to be removably connected together, of a pair of connecting plates secured to said members respectively, one of said lates having side flanges embracing the ot er plate, and connecting bolts extending through said side fianges and the connecting plate embraced thereby, said plates having tapering interfitting lugs and recesses, substantially as specified.
6. In a car frame, the combination with a center sill and a draft timber, of a pair of connecting plates secured .to said sill and draft timber respectively, short bolts connecting said plates to said draft timber and sill respectively, one of said plates having side fianges embracing the other plate and a bolt extending through said side flanges and the plate embraced thereby, substantially as specified.
7. In a car frame, the combination with a Vcenter sill' and a draft timber, of a pairof connecting plates secured to said sill and draft Il timber respectively, short bolts connecting said plates to said draft timber and sill respectively, one of said plates having side i flanges embracing the other plate and a bolt extending through said side flanges and the plate embraced thereby, said plates having f interfitting lugs and recesses respectively,
l substantially as specified.
8. In a car frame, the combination with a center sill and a draft timber, of a pair of con necting plates secured to said sill and draft timber respectively, short bolts connecting said plates to said draft timber and sill respectively, one of said plates having side flanges embracing the other plate and a bolt extending through said side flanges and vthe plate embraced thereby, said flange on the inner side of said connecting plate being inwardly offset, substantially as specified.
9.
