UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. GILMA N, ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO TRANSOM DRAFT GEAR COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
EMERGENCY DRAFT-GEAR ATTACHJIIENT FOR RAILROAD-CARS.
Patented July 6, 1909;
a lication filed February a, 1909. Serial No. 475,809. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. GILMAN, a citizen of the United States,'residin at St. Paul, in the county 'of Ramsey and tate of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Im rovement in Emergency Draft-Gear Attac ments for Railroad-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a draw-bar pocket or follower stop-plate attachment to a railroad car for temporary use in lieuof the ,ordinary draw-bar pocket when the latter is rendered inoperative by the accidentalbreakage of or injury to the draft-timbers and combined middle sills of the car while in service, and has for its object to enable the damaged car to be hauled. by its own draft-' gear to the place of repair.
The invention consists in features of novelty as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accom 'anying drawing forming part of this spec' cation, whereon, s
Figure 1, is a top lan view of my. improved draw-bar poc et attachment and combined draft-gear as a plied to the under side of the end portion 0 a car underframe;
Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section through the underframe on line 2, 2, in Fig. 1, showing the attachment in side elevation and g mitting the coupler-shank or draw-bar;
1 3, th ough the endportion of the underframe on line 3, 3, in Fig. 1, showing the attachment and draft-gear in correspondin elevation, and Fig. 4, a cross section to en arged scale through one of the bifurcated members of,the attachment on line 4, 4, in Fig. 1.
Like letters and numerals of reference denote like parts in all the figures.
(t represents my improved-draw-bar pocket attachment and b the car underframe to the end portion of which on its underside, in the event of both the draft-timbers and combined parts of the middle sills 1 thereat being damaged in service, it is temporarily fixed in duplicate, one on each side of the longitudinal center of the underframe a as shown in J removal of the latter with its draft-timber and corresponding part of the middle sill 1 at a vertical longitudinal section,
bined timber on the other side maintained intact.
The attachment a which is preferably composed of cast steel integral throughout,
comprises a plate 2 which, when assembled, is arranged in a vertical plane and position similar to that. of the ordinary draw bar pocket on the corresponding side of the said center.
Projecting from the face of the plate 2 are two 0 )posite upright parallel lugs 3 at a suitable c istance apart corresponding to that between the lu s or stops of the ordinary drawbar pocket For the follower-plates 4 of the draft-gear, while from the rear side of the plate 2 projects horizontally a suitable memer 0, preferably a bifurcated member as.
shown, the legs or extended portions 5 of which diverge from their junction with the plate 2 and are adapted at the top to bear against twoor more of the intermediate longitudinal sills 6 (and preferably also the side sills 6) of the underframe b to which thely are firmly fixed preferably by bolts 7.
e 'legs or extended portions 5 may be of any suitable shape in cross section, preferab y channel-shaped as shown in Fig. 4, and are reinforced at their junction with the body of the member 0 and plate 2 by suitable ribs 8, the whole forming a strong, and rigid draw-bar ocket attachement adapted to resist the ufiing and pulling stress of the draft-gear through the follower-plates 4 sis-efficiently asthe ordinary pocket and its attachment to the draft-timbers. The space between the inside faces of the lugs 3 at the top is in the present case closed by a web 9 which is integral with the plate and preferably, formed at its outer edge with an upwardly rojecting flange 10, which is adapted facia ly to engage with the corresponding flange of the duplicate attachment a at the other side of the said center, the two flanges 10 in this case being secured together preferably by bolts 11, while the space between the inside faces of the lugs 3 at the bottom may be closed by removable bars 12 secured to the plate 2 by bolts 13.
By my invention in the case of injury to the ordinary draw-bar pocket and combined draft-timber or timbers (as the case may be), necessitating their removal from a car while in service, the damaged car can be hauled by its draft-gear to the place of repair without the delay and expense of discon-- necting the car from the train and replacing ,the broken parts Where the aocident hapens.
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1'. Ali-emergency draft attachment to a car underframe', consisting. of 'a memberada ted to form one-halfyof a draw-bar.
draft-gear, and means for fixing the said cast-' ing tothe intermediate longitudinal sills of the car, substantially as described.
3. An emergency draft attachment'to a car underframe, consisting of a vertically arranged plate, two opposite upright lugs projecting from the face of and integral with the plate and ada ted to form stops for the folower-plates of the car draft-gear, means for closing the space between the said lugs at the bottom, a suitable member projecting from the rearside of and integral with the plate, and means for fixing the said member to the intermediate longitudinal sills of the said frame, substantially as described.
4. An emergency draft attachment to a car underframe, consisting of a vertically arranged plate, two opposite upright lugs projecting from the face of and integral with the plate and adapted to form stops for the foloWer-plates of the ear draft-gear, means for closing the space between the said lugs at the top and bottom respectively, a suitable member projecting from the rear side of and integral with the plate, and means for fixing the said member'to the intermediate longitudinal sills of the said frame, substantially as described.
5. An emergency draft attachment to a car-underframe, consisting of a vertically arranged plate, two opposite upright lugs projecting from the face of and integral With-the plate and adapted to form stops for the folower-plates ofthe can draft-gear, means for closing the s ace betweenthe said lugs atthe bottom, a ifurcated' member rojecting from the rear side of'and integra with the plate, and means for fixing the said member to the intermediate longitudinal sills of the said frame, substantially as described.
6. An emergency draft attachment to a car underframe, consisting of a vertically arranged plate, two opposite upright lugs projecting from the face of and integral with the plate, and adapted to form stops for the foloWer-plates of the car draft-gear, means for closing the space between the said lugs at the bottom, a suitable member projecting from the rear side of and integral with. the plate, means for fixing the said member to the intermediate longitudinal sills of the said frame, a Web projecting from and integral with the plate and adapted to close the space between the said lugs at the top, and a flange projecting upward from the said web at its outer portion, substantially as described.
