A ASSIGNORS TO RODGER BALLAST CAR COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLI- NOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
FREIGHT-CAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 1906.
Application led November 16, 1905. Serial No. 287.654.
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that We, HARRY STILLsON HART and JOHN O. NEIKIRK, citizens of the United States, residing in Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Freight-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a stop and bracefiller for the draft-lugs and frame of arailwaycar, and has for its object to produce a simple and effective device for this purpose.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a portion of a car-frame, showing myinvention; Fig. 2, a top planview thereof; Fig. 3, an end elevation, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of the brace and stop-plates.
In the drawings is shown a portion of a car-frame, in which a represents the end sill, and b b the usual draft-beams, betweenwhich the draft-rigging is secured. A portion of this draft-rigging is indicated at c in the drawings; but as it forms no part of the present invention it need not be specifically described.
As is well known, the draft-rigging is subject to great shocks and jars. This has sometimes resulted in the tearing away of the draft-rigging and the breaking of the frame portions to which it is attached. In order to revent this result, we introduce between the end of the draft-lugs and the end sill of the car a combined stop and brace-filler. (Best shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.) As here shown, the filler comprises a casting of a general triangular shape having adjacent faces CZ and d. The face d rests against the under side of the end sill, and the face d against the end of the side plates of thepdraftrigging. Integral with the filler and on the face d is a vertical projection e, having a hole or passage-way e, through which a bolt t passes to secure the casting to the end sill.
From the upper end of the face d a right-angle lug g projects, which rests on the top of the side plates of the draft-rigging. The lug gis connected with the projection e bya solid plate fn', having a flange 7c. A similar solid plate Z connects the top and side faces d d, which are further braced and strengthened by integral ribs m m The plate Z is provided with a hole or passage-way n for the reception of a bolt to secure the plate to the adj acent beam, and on either side of this passageway are lugs or ears o, between which the head of the bolt is received and prevented from turning.
It will be observed that as the brace member is placed between the ends of the draftlugs and the end sill the face d forms a stop which prevents the draft-rigging from being pulled out of place, and it will also be observed that the vstrains are transmitted through the members of the filler to the framework of the car and distributed so that the shock is resisted in a very efiicient manner.
We claiml. A car having the usual end sills and draft-beams, draft-rigging provided with the usual draft-lugs between the draft-beams, and a separate filler interposed between the draft-lugs and an end sill, said filler being provided with portions bearing on the top and end of the draft-rigging and on the bottom and side of the end sill.
2. In a car having the usual end sills and draft-beams, draft-rigging havin@r draft-lugs between the draft-beams, and a filler between the draft-lugs and an end sill, the filler having flanged portions bearing against an end sill and the draft-lugs.
3. As an article of manufacture, a filler comprising a triangular plate having flanged faces provided with strengthening-flanges, a projection having a hole or passage-wayr therethrough integral with the plate on one of the anged faces, a lug integral with the other flanged face extending at right angles to the projection, and a flanged brace-plate connecting the projection and lug.
