To all 1111mm it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. LIINER,
- a citizen of the United States, residing in (hicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new-and useful Improvement in Draft-Arms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in draft arms for railway car underframes.
One object of the invention is to provide a two-piece draft arm which may be attached to the wooden sills of a car underframe to brace the sills and vso arranged} that the hufiing and pulling shocks are transmitted in an eilicient manner to the sills.
Another object of the invention is toprovide a draft arm of the character above indicated which may be made in the form of a malleable casting and which is cheaper and lighter than structures hitherto used.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of theparts and devices herein shown, described or claimed.
In said drawing block or buffer beam; said parts being arnotes the body bolster casting which, as shown, is provided with recesses 14, one on each side of the kingpin, through which extend the ends of sub-sills 15. Each draft arm is shown as comprising a front member A and a rear member B, said members having overlapping portions 150, and 160,

The member A, at its forbuffer beam as shown at '16 and is provided with a shoulder 117 to abut the inner side ward end, extends beneath the end sill and and limiting stops 19, 19. The member A has a lower flange 20, upper flange 21 which extends beneath the center sill 10 and by which the draft arm is secured thereto by bolts and nuts 22, 23. At its inner end the member A is provided with a transversely extended flange 24 against which the outer end 'of'the sub-sill 15 abuts whereby the bufiing shocks are transmitted from 'the member A directly in line with the sub-sill 15. The member B issubstantially of angular cross section throughout its length and has a vertical web 25 and horizontal web 26, the latter being placed between the center, sill 10 and the sub-sill 15 as shown most clearly in Fig. 5.; The member B is secured to the sills by vertically extending bolts 27 and by transversely extending bolts 28, the latter, on the outer sides of the center sills, passing through plates 128 to prevent the bolts from pulling through the vwooden sills. Over the bolster 13 the meniber B is recessed as shown at 29 to fit the top plate of the bolster and the vertical web 25 is upwardly extended as indicated at 30.
Each member B is also provided with a shoulder 31 to support truss rod saddles 32, seeFigs. 1 and 2. The overlapping end 160 of each member B is extended down to a point below the lower plate of the body bolster and such extension is formed with a shoulder 33 which abuts against the body bolster. Each of said overlapping extensions is also provided at its forward end with another shoulder 34 which coiiperates with a correspondingly located shoulder 35 in ach member A, the structure just descri ed providing an exceedingly rigid and solid connection between the members A and B of each draft arm.
From the preceding description it will of rigid and substantial construction al-- though the same is relatively light.
Although I have herein shown and described what 'I now consider the preferred embodiment of. my improvements, yet-it modifications may be made without epart- --'ing from the spirit of the invention and all such changes and modifications are contemplated as come Within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a car underframe, the combination with wooden sills, of a draft arm secured thereto, said draft arm comprising two members overlapped and secured together between the bolster and the end sill of the car, the inner member of the draft arm extending over and to the rear of the bodybolister and secured to the wooden sill and adapted to brace the latter, the front member being also secured to the sill and bracing the latter.
2. In an underframing for railway cars, the combination with a wooden sill extending to the end sill of the car, of adraft arm secured to said sill, said draft arm comprising two malleable castings having overlapped ends, secured. together, the said draft arm extending over the body-bolster of the ear and to the rear thereof and secured to and bracing the Wooden sill from the end thereof to a point at the rear of the bolster.
In und cframing for railway cars, a draft arm comprising two malleable castings having overlapped nil-l -eairrd together, one of said castings SOI'YlZ as a stop memher and having a shoulder at its inner end adapted to abut the end of a longitudinal sill, the other of said castings extending over the bod y bolster and to the rear thereof and having a shoulder engaging one side of the body bolster, substantially as specified.
4. In underframing for railway cars the Combination with center sills, bolsters and draft arms passing over the bolsters of saddles for truss rods, said saddles being mounted upon the draft arms and located 'on the inner sides thereof, substantially as specified.
5. In an underframe for railway cars, the combination with wooden center sills having wooden sub-sills secured thereto, said sub-sills terminating adjacent the body-bolsters, of a body-bolster, and draft arms, said draft arms each comprising a. member secured to the center sill and arranged to brace the same and having also flanges abutting the body-bolsters and a sub-sill end.
