UNDERFRAME FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 780,317, dated January 17, 1905.
Application filed March 21,1904. Serial No. 199,084.
To (ti/Z who? it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. Barren- DORF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underframes for Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Economy of construction, ability to withstand the pulling strain and resist the concussion or shock of the bumping of the cars, and adaptability to maintain the standard distance of the draft-rigging above the rails are the essential considerations necessary to be observed in the building of the center sills of the underframes of ordinary cars. 1-Ieretofore such center sills have been made of continuous timber or beams extending from end to end of the car having specially-formed extremities and provided with special attachments for the draft-rigging or have been made of several spliced sections of timber or of metal beams having the draft-rigging attachments or drop-frames for said attachments connected thereto.
The object of my invention is to dispense entirely with said attachments, and thus avoid the shearing of rivets or bolts used in connection therewith, and to provide center sills which possess all the characteristics first mentioned to a maximum degree. This I accomplish by the novel means hereinafter described in the specification and fully set forth in the claims.
1n the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of the underframe of acar embodying my invention, which is broken away from the remainder thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective viewof the same dismantled by having the nigh side sill and center sill removed. Fig. 3 is a similar perspective taken almost Fig. 4 is a plan view of the end portions of one of the center sills of my invention. Fig. 5 is a side view thereof,
showing the body-bolster in cross-section. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one end of my improved underframe looking toward the end of it.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent the side sills, B the end sill, and C the bodybolster, of the underframe of acar. I prefer to make these parts of pressed steel and of rolled metal beams, although this is not essential. The body-bolsters are preferably provided with suitable end extensions (1., that pass under and support the side sills. The center sills of this underframe between the bolsters is preferably made of sections of rolled-metal beams D D, which at a point near said body-bolsters are riveted or otherwise connected to the adja cent flanged shank b?) of the cast-metal end extensions E Eof said center sills. These extensions are constructed so as to pass over the bolster and are provided with recesses c in their lower edges, up into which said body-bolster enters. On either side of recess 0 the lower edges of these center sills are dropped to form shoulders (Z tl, that abut against the sides of the bolster. Both the lower edge and upper edge of the extensions D are preferably flanged throughout their length, and the lower flanged extremities of shoulders cZ cl thereof are provided with transverse grooves e a, into which the tenons f f, projecting up from the ends of the parallel members of the substantially H-shaped body center plate G, enter. Each of these parallel members of plate G pass transversely under the bolster and connect the lower extremities of the shoulders (Z of the metal ends I) of the center sills, respectively, and rivets are preferably employed for this purpose. The cross member of said plate G has the usual center bearing-boss a depending down therefrom midway between the center sills, and it is provided with the necessary concentric opening for the passage of the king-bolt therethrough. As before stated, the edges of the ends E of the center sills are flanged laterally. This applies also to the edges of the recesses c therein, and the edge of said recesses above the bolster have lateral flanges g, which project to an extent corresponding to one-half the distance between said center sills and meet. These flanges g are preferably secured by riveting or otherwise to the upper flanges of the parallel I-beams composing the body-bolster C and are provided with corresponding semicircular re cesses it it in their meeting edges that together form the upper bearing for the king-bolt. The flanges 2', projecting from the ends E opposite flanges 9, also project farther from that side of the extension than at other points along its length and are riveted to the upper flanges of the truss-beams of the body-bolster. In view of lines of strain to which the metal ends E will be subjected both above and in front and to the rear of the body-bolster, I prefer to reinforce the same on both sides by a vest of horizontal ribs j and vertical and downwardly-inclined spreading ribs m, which latter converge toward a common center above and in the same transverse plane as the kingbolt center and connect and merge into the upper and lower flanges of the said extensions E, as shown. Between the body-bolster and the end sill B the opposing sides of said extensions are provided with guideways or pockets 0 0 for the follower-plates of the draw-bar, substantially as shown. In order to effect the distribution of the strain upon the extension imparted from the draft-rigging through the medium of the follower-plates, I prefer to advance the rectangular portions of the vertical web of said extensions forming the background of these guideways, to bound the top and the end walls of said guidewa-ys by laterally flanged or projected surfaces, and to provide the side of the extensions opposite said guideways with longitudinal ribs 1).
In view of the differently-constructed draftriggings it is possible to use with my improved center sills I do not desire to be confined to the exact construction of the extensions E of the center sills as hereinbefore described or as shown in the drawings. It is obvious these cast-metal end extensions of the center sills can be built lower down than as shown in the drawings when the height of the car-body requires it or can be built high, according as desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
hat I claim as new is 1. An under sill for a car comprising a rolled-metal beam terminating between the bolsters, and cast-metal ends therefor extending over the body-bolsters.
