JAMES S. ANDREWS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y..
UNDERFRAME FOR CARS AND TENDERS.
Specificatipn of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1909.
Application filed May 11, 1908. Serial No. 432,031,
To all whom. it may concern;
Be it. known that I, Jun-1s SpAivoiirnvs, a citizen of the llnitcd States, residing at lietv York city, in the eouutyot' New York and t-ltate of New York, have invented new and useful linprmrinenls in Undertraines for Cars and 'lender of which the followiiig is a spog-ilii-ittion.
My invention relatesto cast steel underframes especially adapted for freight cars houying my invention. t Fig. '2 is :1V longiti'idinal sectional view on. the line 2.-'-2 of Fig. 1. F1". 3 is an elevation of the end Sill.
Fig. -lis a sectional view on the line 4-t of Fig. l. showing the body bolster in elevation. Fig. 5 is a. SCCllUlliLl; View onthe line 4 v o-o ot i 1g. 1, showing thecross tie, or
needle beam, in elevation.
Referring tov the drawings, the undert'ranie comprises a. single Center sill 7 extending throughout the length of'the undert'raiue and made in asingle casting, .two end sills 8 made alike from the same pattern, two body bolsters 9 and two cross t ies, or needle beams, 10. all made alike from the same pattern. Thus. these essential parts of the undcrt'raino can be made from three patterns, one for therenter sill, one for the end sills and one for the body bolsters and cr ss ties. t
The center sill T is iuade'in a substantially inverted U- hape t'orin'in cross section and is provided at suitable intervals with openings T to reditce its weight. these o ir-einngs being so disposed that they Wlll not impair thestrength of the sill. At the lower edges of the center sill are outwardly projecting lateral flanges 11 which preferably extend throughout its length to stiffen the sill and providea rest and fastening part for the body bolsters and cross ties. A plurality of transverse guide lugs til-are arranged in pairs at proper intervals on the top of the center sill for a purpose hereafter described.
The middle part of the center sill is prefsame 1113111101.
eribly made deeper than the end parts for greater strength and the ends are reduced or oilset atv 12 to receive the end sills. Center hearings 1-lare cast integral with the center sill and the latter may be provided above said bearings and atintervalsthroughout its length with located strengthening webs l5.
Zach end sill is made in substantially L form and is provided at the center with a depending apron or butter plate 16 having an opening 16' for the coupler. The end interiorly sills rest in the offsets .13 01 the center sill and are bolted to cross webs 17 on the center sill. t t
. The body bolster is east in one piece with an arch 18 at the center conforming to the transverse section of the center sill and to tit snugly thereon. ll) of the arch fits snugly between a pair of guide lugs 11! whereby the bolster is prevented t'roni twisting or weaving and is held in rigid position square with the center sill.
The bolster 9 (Fig. l) rests upon the flanges 11 and is riveted or bolted thereto.
.The cross ties, or needle beams 10 (Fig. 5)
are made exactly' like the bolsters 9 and are arranged in place on the center silliii the As the'cross ties are located The top or connecting web between the bolsters where the center sill is deeper than at the bolsters I provide flanges 20 on the center sill upon which the cross ties rest and to which. they are riveted or bolted. The bolsters and cross ties are provided with side bearings :21 and are'depressed at 9, it). above the side beariiigs to receive the stringers 2:2 which may each extend in one piece throughout-thelength of the undertrame. Lugs :33are made integral with the bolsters and cross ties to support the sectional stringers 24 and the end sills have integral lugs 25 to support the stringers.
I Each side sill eonsists of a Z-sha e bar 26 which restsupon and is riveted or olted to the ends of the end sills, body bolsters and ,cross ties and supports the wood sill 27. One
end flange QtY-ot'each side sill overlaps the ends of the bolsters, cross ties and end sills and the other end flange 26" PIOJGCtS outwardly from saidparts. The end posts 28 vstand onthe upper flange 8 of the end sill and a wood end sil129 is arranged in the endsill 8. The end lining 30 of the car is fastened to the post 28 and the end siding 31 is fastened to the post 28 andto the wood end sill 29. If there should betany appreciable longitudinal shrinkage of the center sill in casting the predetermined longitudinal 1nterior dimensions of the car may be preserved by properly roportioning the width of the wood end sil s 29.
The transoms may be made of angle iron and fastened in any suitable nn'inner to the center and side sills. Braces ere erranged at each end of the underfrarne and extend diagonally from the end sill, adja cent to the center sill, to the outer ends or the bolster, these braces being connected at their ends to the end sill and the bolster.
The principal parts of the underfrnme are preferably made of steel castings and the construction is such that the cost of mannthe combination of :1 center sill, pair of bolsters each provided between its ends with an arch to receive the center sill, and a plnrelity of cross ties made like the bolsters and located between the ends of the center sill.
7, in an underfrarne for cars and tenders, an end sill L-shape in cross section and crranged in a horizontal position, and a wood sill in the hooked end of snid end sill.
8. .\n underfraine for cars and tenders comprising a center sill extending throughout the length of the nndcrframe and. made in one casting, lateral llilflfIQS on said center v sill, a pair of'bolstcrs and plurality of lecture is greatly reduced by reason of the few parts and patterns require The weight of the underframe for a car of a given capacity may be much than has heretofore been possible while at the same time the strength of the nnderfrarne is increased.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letwebs located within the center sill above said bearings.
3. In an nnderfrarne for cars and tenders a center sill extending throughout the length of the under-frame and made in one castirng, and gliide lugs integral with the center sill and extending transversely across the top thereof. 1
l. I n an underfranie for cars and tenders, an end sill made in one casting and L-shape in cross section, and an apron integral with said end sill and depending therefrom between its ends. 1
