UNDER-FRAME FOR CARS. APPLICATION FILED APR.16.1909.
Patented Mar. 15,1910.

ANTON BECKER, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE RALSTON STEEL CAR COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
UNDERFRAME FOR CARS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON BECKER, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underframes for Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in underframes for cars, and more particularly to the cross-bearer and its connection with the side sills,-the object of the invention being to provide a cross-bearer by means of which substantially the entire load can be brought upon the center girder, and to so construct said cross-bearer that its compression member shall be utilized to form a side sill connection for the cross-bearer and also constitute a substantial support for the side furring strips.
I'Vith this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a transverse sectional view of a car undert'rame embodying my invention.
1 represents a center girder of the box type and 2, 2, channel side sills which are connect-ed with the center girder by means of cross-bearers 3.
Each cross-bearer comprises, at respective sides of the center girder upper angle-beams at and lower angle beams 5 which are secured at their inner ends to a center girder member, through the medium of gussets 6. The upper or tension member 4 at respective sides of the center girder are connected by a tension plate 7 which passes through the center girder and is riveted to the horizontal portions of the respective angle-beams 4:. A compression plate 8 is secured to the horizontal portions of the respective angle-beams 5 and passes under the center girder,to the lower flanges of which it is riveted. Each upper or tension beam 4 terminates a short distance from the side sill and the outer end of each compression angle beam 5 is bent up- Specification of Letters Patent.

wardly to form an extension 9 which lies against the side sill and is riveted thereto. The outer ends of the tension and compression angle-beams are secured together and reinforced by means of gussets 10. The extension 9 of the compression member projects above the plane of the tension member and the side sill and is bolted to the side furring strip 11 which is located upon the side sill 2.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-
1. In a car underframe, the combination with a center girder and side sills, of a cross bearer comprising a tension member and a compression member secured to the center girder, the out-er end of the compression member being bent upwardly and secured to the side sill and a gusset connecting the outer ends of the tension and compression members.
2. In a car underframe, the combination with a center girder and side sills, of a crossbearer comprising angle-beam tension and compression members secured to the center girder, the outer end of the compression member being bent upwardly and having one of its flanges secured to the center girder, and a gusset connecting the outer ends of said angle-beam members.
3. In a car underframe, the combination with a center girder and side sills, of a crossbearer comprising angle-beam tension and compression members secured to the center girder, the outer end of the compression member being bent upwardly and extending above the plane of the tension member and the side sill and secured to the latter, and a furring strip mounted on the side sill and secured to the upwardly extending portion of the compression member.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANTON BECKER.
