Patented Feb. 111, 1913.
Original application filed July 6, .1908, Serial No. 442,106. Divided and this application filed October 12,
To all whom it may concern citizen of the United States, residing at Montreal,- in the Province of Quebec,
Dominion of Canadtnhave invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved side stake for railway cars.
This invention is a divisionot the matter originally shown and claimed in my appl1- (311131011 Serial No. 442,106, filed July 6, 1908.
. In the drawings-Figure 1 shows a transverse section of a car embodying my improve'side stake construction. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improved stake construction. Fig. 3 is a .view partly in section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4c is a section on the line 4; 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line .5 5 of Fig. 2.
Like reference numerals refer to like ele-.
ments throughout thedrawings, 'in which I have illustrated my invention in connection with a convertible center dump hopper car although, as will be apparent, my improved side stakes are applicable to cars of other types. The sides of the car illustrated are formed of doors, 1, hinged at their upper edges to the top rail, 2, the latter being supported upon the side stakes 3. The floor of the car comprises stationary horizontal side sections, 4, extending from the intermedlnte sills 5 to the side sills 6. Hinged longitudinally of the car over the intermediate sills 5 are central floor sections, 7, adjustable either to the position shown at the left of Fig. 1 or to the position shown at the right of that view. Adjustment to former position forms a flat bottom gondola car and adj ustment to the latter position forms a center dump hopper car. The central longitudinal hopper comprises a stationary inclined side 8 and an opposed side consisting of a door, 9, hinged at 10 to the intermediate sill 5.
As mv invention is applicable to many types of car the foregoing brief description of the particular car illustrated is sutiicient for the purposes of this application.
My improved side stake 3 is preferably composed of a channel iron 11 and an angle bar 12 having their websadjacent and secured together as shown in Fig. 4. These parts are preferably secured together in such Serial No. 654,343.
manner that the flange 13 of the angle iron and the flange 1% of the channel iron extend in opposite directions in the same plane. Adjacent the lower extremity of the parts 11 and 12 and secured therebetween is a metal plate 15 which projects beneath the members 11 and 12 and has secured to its projecting part an angle iron 16. A. transverse gusset plate 17 is secured to and extends between the side sill (3 and intermediate sill 5 and to this gusset plate 1? the inner end of the angle iron 16 is riveted. The gusset plate 18 overlies and is secured to the upper sides of the intermediate and side sills and a brace 19 is secured between the members 11 and 12 of the side stake and projects inwardly above the gusset plate 18. The brace 19 is provided with ahorizontal flange 20 which is secured to the gusset plate 18. By the construction described the side stake is firmly anchored at two points well spaced apart, and is thus well calculated to resist the stresses imposed upon it in service.
Secured to the vertical portion of the plate 19 and on the opposite side from the horizontal flange 20 is a small angle iron 21 secured to the brace 19 and to the plate 18. At the upper extremity of the stake 5;. nd having one flange secured between the members 11 and 12 is a small angle iron 22 having a horizontally directed flange 22 to which is adapted to be secured the top rail 2 of the car, shown in this instance as formed of a longitudinally extending T-beam 23 carrying a wooden or other strip 2 1M. its upper portion. Where it is intended to use this type of stake in a car designed ter unloading by means of a plow, ll preferably provide my stake 20 with a reinforcing and protecting membehaving flanges 26, as shown in Fig. of the drawings.
lVhat I desire to protect by United States Patent and claim is- 1. In a car,'an undcrframea side sill forming part of said underframc, a side stake on the outer side of said under-frame and extending upwardly therefrom. braces secured to said side stake and extending inwardly therefrom above and below said side sill and secured to said uiulcrfranic.
si dcastake and extending above and below said side sill and secured to said intermediate sill.
3. In a car a side stake comprising an angle iron and a channel beam having their \vebs riveted together.
4. In a car, a side stake comprising an angle iron and a channel beam, said angle iron having one side secured to the Web of said channel beam in such a manner that the free side of said angle iron and one of the flanges of said channel beam will extend in opposite directions.
5. In a car, a side stake comprising an angle iron and a channel beam, said angle iron having one side secured to the web of said channel beam in such a manner that the free side of said angle iron and of the flanges of said channel beam will extend in opposite directions and lie approximately in the same plane.
6. In a car, a side stake comprising an angle iron and a channel beam, said angle iron having one side secured to the web of the channel beam in such a manner that the free side of said angle iron and one of the flanges of said channel beam will extend in opposite directions and lie in approximately the same plane, and a reinforcing member secured to the oppositely extending flange and side of said channel beam and angle bar, respectively. I
In testimony whereof, I have subscribed my name.
