SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,388, dated November 8, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs A. HOERR, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Draft-Rigging, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact. description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,.forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to draft-riggingfor railway-cars, and more particularly to that form of draft-rigging known as ftandem draft-rigging, in which two or more draftsprings are arranged in the rigging in tandem relation. One of the main objects of my invention is to dispense with the use of draw-bar straps and tail-bolts in the above-described class of draft-rigging, whereby the parts are more readily removed and placed in position than in the form of draft-rigging heretofore used. This construction also allows of greater an gular lateral movement of the draw-bar, and consequently the draw-bar can more readily accommodate itself to the direction of the thrust or pull when the cars are rounding a curve.
My invention consists in various novel features and details of construction, all of which are described in the following specification and pointed-out in the claims afiixed hereto.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a draft-rigging made in accordance with my invention, together with a portion of a car to which the same is attached, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the rigging removed from the car. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the draft-sills looking at the inside of the sill. Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3 looking at the outside of the sill. Fig. 5 is a horizontal longitudinal section through the rigging. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 5.

10 is the car-decking, 11 the end sills, 12 the sheathing, 13 the dead-wood, 14 the coupler-bearing, 15 the body-bolster, and 16 the center sills, all of which may be of any ordinary construction.
Secured to the lower edges of the center sills 16 are the draft-sills 17. These draftsills 17 are made of metal and are secured to the center sills by bolts 18 passing through.
the said center sills and through lugs 19 on the draft-sills. Arranged between the draftsills 17 is the draw-bar 20, provided'with the usual coupler-head 21. Passing through the draw-bar 2O isa key 22. This key 22 also passes through an elongated slot 23 in the forward end of the draft-sills 17. The rear end of the draw-bar 2O bears against a follower-plate 24. This follower-plate 24 is providedwith guides 25, formed on the inner surfaces of the draft-sills 17, and with stops 26, which limit the forward movement of the said followerplate. Resting against the follower-plate 24 is a draft-spring 27, the opposite end of which rests against the forward end of a springpocket 28. iliary spring 29. The spring 27 is held against falling from between the parts 24 and 28 by means of a cross-bar 30, bolted to lugs 31, carried on the draft-sills 17 The spring 27 is prevented from upward movement by a short hood 32, carried by the spring-pocket 28. Passing through the spring-pocket 28 is a follower-plate 33, situated within the springpocket 28, and at the rear of the follower-' plate 33 is a main draft-spring 34 and an auxiliary draft-spring 35. Passing through the spring-pocket 28 infront of the follower-plate 33 is a key 36. This key 36 passes between a pair of guides 40. The keys 22 and 36 are connected outside of the draft-sills 17 by means of connecting bars or links 39. The followerplate 33 is held in position by guides 37 on the draft-sills 17, and its forward movement is limited by a stop 41. The guides 37 and stop 41 are similar to, the guides and the stops 26 hereinbefore described. The key 36 also passes through a slot 42 in the draft-sills 17, similar to the slot 23, through which the key 22 passes. Within the spring 27 is an 3.11X-' shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or by stops 44, formed on the draft-sills 17 as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. 45 represents bolts passing through lugs 46 on the draft-sills 17 and anchoring the said draft-sills to the body-bolster 15., The springpocket 28 is partially supported by the key 36. In order to more firmly support the same in position, however, I provide a cross-bar 47, bolted to lugs 48 on the draft-sills 17.
The operation of my rigging is as follows: When the draw-bar 20 is drawn forward, its movement is communicated,'through the key 22 and connecting-bars 39, to the key 36. The forward movement of the key 36 carries the spring-pocket 28 forward, and as the forward movement of the follower-plate 24 is limited by the stops 26 the springs 27 and 29 are compressed. At the same time the springs 34 and 35 are compressed between the follower-plate 33 and the rear end of the spring-pocket. The compression of the springs through the follower- plates 24 and 33 transfers the strain to the draft-sills 17, and these in turn through the bolts 45 transmit practically the entire strain to the body-bolster 15. In case of a thrust in place of a pull on the draw-bar 20 the springs 27 and 29 are compressed between the forward end of the spring-pocket 28 and the follower-plate 24, because the movement of the spring-pocket to the rear is limited either by the block 43 or by the stops 44 hereinbefore described. At the same time the movement of the draw-bar is transmitted, through the key 22 and connecting-bars 39, to the key 36, and this key by forcing the follower-plate 33 to the rear will compress the springs 34 and 35 between the said followerplate and the rear end of the spring-pocket.
It will be evident that as there are no drawbar straps or tail-bolts used in my construction the various parts of the rigging may be readily removed and replaced simply by removing the cross-bars 30 and 47 and the keys 22 and 36, and at the same time the absence of these draw-bar straps and tail-bolts allows great angular movement of the draw-bar, so that the draw-bar can accommodate itself to the direction of a pull or thrust in passing around curves. My construction is also such that nearly the entire thrust or pull is transferred to the body-bolster.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is i 1. In a draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, of draft-sills, a pair of draftsprings between said sills, a key passing through said draw-bar and draft-sills, a second key passing through said draft-sills and between said springs, and connections between said keys.
2. In a draft-rigging, the combination with a draw bar, of draft sills, a pair of draftsprings between said sills, a key passing through said draw-bar and draft-sills, a seeond key passing through said draft-sills and between said springs, and connections outside of said draft-sills between said keys.
3. In a draft-rigging, the combination with a draw bar, of draft sills, a springpocket between said draft-sills, a spring in said springpocket, a key passing through said springpocket, a key passing through said draw-bar, and connections between said keys.
4. In a draft-rigging, the combination with a draw bar, of draft sills, a springpocket between said draft-sills, a follower passing through said spring-pocket, a spring in said pocket at one side of said follower, a key passing through said spring-pocket at the other side of said follower, and connections between said key and draw-bar.
5. In a draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, of draft-sills, a spring-pocket between said draft-sills, a follower passing through said spring-pocket, a spring in said pocket at one side of said follower, a key passing through said spring-pocket at the other side of said follower, a key passing through said draw-bar, and connections between said keys.
6. In a draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, of draft-sills, a draft-spring between said sills, a spring pocket bearing against said spring, a second spring within said spring-pocket, a, key passing through said spring-pocket, a key passing through said draw-bar, and connections between said keys.
7. In a draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, of draft-sills, a spring-pocket, a spring between said draw-bar and springpocket, a second spring in said spring-pocket, a key passing through said pocket, at key passing through said draw-bar, and connections between said keys.
8. In a draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, of draft-sills, a spring-pocket, a follower against which said draw-bar bears, a spring between said follower and said springpocket, a follower passing through said springpocket, a second spring in said spring-pocket at one side of said follower, a key passing through said spring-pocket at the other side of said follower, a key passing through said draw-bar, and connections between said keys.
9. In a draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, of draft-sills, a spring-pocket, a spring between said draw -bar and springpocket, a hood carried by said spring-pocket for preventing the upward movement of said spring, a second spring in said spring-pocket, a key passing through said spring-pocket, and connectionsbetween said key and draw-bar.
10. In a draft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, of draft-sills, a spring-pocket, a spring between said draw-bar and springpocket, a hood carried by said spring-pocket for preventing the upward movement of said spring, a second spring in said spring-pocket, a key passing through said spring-pocket, a
' follower, a second follower passing through said spring-pocket, stops limiting the forward movement of said second follower, a spring in said spring-pocket, a second spring between said spring-pocket and said first follower, and means for limiting the rearward movement of said spring-follower.
12. In adraft-rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, of draft-sills, a spring-pocket, a follower against which said draw-bar bears, stops limiting the forward movement of said follower, a second follower passing through said spring-pocket, stops limiting the forward movement of said second follower, a spring in said spring-pocket,'a second spring between said spring-pocket and said first follower, a bolster, and a block extending from said bolster to said spring-pocket for limiting the rearward movement of the latter.
13. In a draft-rigging, the combination with a car-body, of a body-bolster, draft-sills carried by said car-body and terminating at a distance in front of said body-bolster, anchorbolts spanning the space between said draftsills' and body-bolster and anchoring the former to the latter, a draw-bar, and spring connections between said draw-bar and draft-sills.
14:. In a draft-rigging,the combination with a car-body, of a body-bolster, draft-sills carried by said car-body and terminating at a distance in front of said body-bolster, lugs carried on the outside of said draft-sills, anchorbolts spanning the space between said lugs and body-bolster and thereby anchoring said draft-sills to said body-bolster, a draw-bar,
and spring connections between said draw-bar and draft-sills.
