375,566. Buffers for railway &c. vehicles. MITCHELL, J., 69, Kenilworth Court, Putney, and COSSEY, J. C. G., Calbourne, The Vale, Golders Green, both in London. July 10, 1931, No. 19898. [Class 103 (v).] In a buffer for railway &c. vehicles having a spindle b made separately from the plunger, the spindle is arranged to have axial movement relative to the plunger, while shocks are absorbed by inner and outer sets of springs, of which the former set d bear against a washer g abutting against a shoulder f on the spindle and the other set c extend between the buffer head a<1> and the base of the casing a, whereby lighter shocks are taken up by the spring c -alone, while heavier shocks compress both sets of springs in parallel. In the arrangement shown the plunger is formed in two parts a<1>, e riveted together and sliding over the casing a, the part e being extended at a2 and bent inwardly to form a non-circular housing and prevent rotation of the head bl of the spindle. A recoil spring k is disposed between the rear of the headstock l and a washer g, and the springs c, d, k are preferably given a slight - initial compression by tightening up a nut h bearing against the washer q. The second stage of compression when the buffer is in action occurs after the inward extension of the part a<2> contacts with the washer q. Other arrangements are described in.which the plunger slides within the casing, in which the extension a<2> is integral with or riveted to the buffer head a<1>, in which the cylindrical portion of the plunger is made separate from the head a<1>, in which the recoil spring and washer are located in a housing projecting forwardly of the headstock into the casing, in which the plunger is made in one piece and the extension a<2> is riveted thereto, and in which the washer g is extended forwardly to bear against the spindle head b<1>, at the same time serving, if required, as a support for maintaining the outer spring c concentric with the spindle.
