Abstract

446,842. Buffers for railway &c. vehicles. TURTON, PLATTS, & CO., Ltd., G., Wincobank, Sheffield, and HEWITT, F., Green Lawn, Green Lane, Dronfield, near Sheffield. Dec. 4, 1934, No. 34838. [Class 103 (v)] Relates to buffers for railway &c. vehicles of the hollow plunger type in which the main shocks are absorbed by springs m located within the casing k, while the final shocks are cushioned and direct contact between the buffer head c and casing prevented by resilient means arranged exteriorly of the plunger i either at the rear of the buffer head or at the forward end of the casing. According to the invention the resilient cushioning means in the form of springs or pads a of rubber or like material are located within a housing and retained in position by a ring d which forms a closure for the housing. In the construction shown the housing for the pads a is formed by providing the buffer head c with an integral rearwardly extending flange b<1>, while the ring d is maintained in position and guided by two attached keys e having lugs g guided within slots h in the casing. Modifications are described in which the housing is constructed as a separate element attached to the buffer head, in which the buffer head is formed separate from but riveted to the plunger, and in which the housing is formed at the forward end of the casing instead of at the rear of the buffer head.
