Abstract

255,288. Priebe, H. C. Nov. 16, 1925. Combined buffer and draw-gear.-A friction-producing member 18 surrounds an extension 21 of a rear follower 8 and has a central portion in the shape of wedges 19, 20 in friction producing engagement with one or two blocks 10, 11 in contact with a front follower 12, the follower extension 21 being in frictional engagement with the outer surface of the blocks 10, 11 and the inner surface of the surrounding member 18, The rear follower 8 and extension 21 are in halves, the extension surrounding the combined buffing and draw-spring 22. In buffing, the coupler stem 6 moves the front follower 12 and blocks 10, 11 rearwardly against the compression of the spring 22 until the blocks strike the wedges 19, 20 which expand the blocks and causes the extension 21 to be gripped frictionally between the outer surface of the blocks 10, 11 and the surrounding member 18. When under draught, the spring 22 alone functions to absorb shocks.
