Abstract
The mother liquor resulting from the treatment of rock phosphate with nitric acid and the separation of calcium nitrate as described in the parent Specification is freed from nitric acid by distillation, preferably under reduced pressure, before or after further treatment of the mother liquor. Direct distillation results in the production of monocalcium phosphate or mixtures of it with phosphoric acid but if the mother liquor contains larger quantities of calcium nitrate the distillation produces residues containing calcium nitrate, mono-calcium phosphate, and dicalcium phosphate. The nitric acid may also be distilled off before or after the remaining calcium is precipitated as gypsum by means of sulphuric acid, ammonium sulphate or alkali sulphates, phosphoric acid, ammonium or alkali phosphates being obtained from the solution remaining. The remaining calcium can also be precipitated by treating the solid mono-calcium phosphate, or a concentrated solution remaining after the distillation, with concentrated nitric acid and removing the solid calcium nitrate precipitated, the resulting phosphoric acid solution being freed from nitric acid by a second distillation. The distillation of nitric acid may be combined with its concentration, for example, by passing the vapours in counter current with strong sulphuric acid in a tower. The nitric acid vapours may also be introduced into a nitric acid tower system used in producing nitric acid from nitrogen oxides.ALSO:The mother liquor resulting from the treatment of rock phosphate with nitric acid and the separation of calcium nitrate as described in the parent Specification is freed from nitric acid by distillation, preferably under reduced pressure, before or after further treatment of the mother liquor.
