Abstract

The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises a modification of the process of the parent Specification for producing potassium nitrate and dimagnesium phosphate, wherein crude phosphate is decomposed with nitric acid, and is treated with a mixture of potassium and magnesium sulphates, or a suitable natural compound such as schonite, leonite or langbeinite, the quantity of magnesium being chosen equivalent to precipitate the phosphoric acid as dimagnesium phosphate. After the separation of gypsum, the solution is treated with potassium carbonate to precipitate the bulk of the magnesium as dimagnesium phosphate, which is separated. The remaining, say, 1 per cent is precipitated by further addition of potassium carbonate as trimagnesium phosphate, which is subsequently used to precipitate dimagnesium phosphate. Potassium nitrate is obtained by evaporation and cooling of the mother liquor, or by cooling alone.
