Abstract

A fertilizer consisting mainly of dicalcium phosphate is prepared by treating raw phosphates with a mixture of nitric acid and sulphuric and/or phosphoric acid, followed, after the decomposition has taken place, by heating to a temperature above 100 DEG C. but below 200 DEG C. thereby removing the nitrogen content substantially completely (i.e. below 3 per cent. preferably below 1 per cent.). The reactant acids are preferably employed in amounts proportionate to their equivalent weights and if sulphuric acid be employed, gypsum may be separated before the heating step. The gases resulting from the heating, which may take place under reduced pressure, may be condensed and the nitric oxides present regenerated to nitric acid. The attacking acids may be employed in succession or together and the reaction temperature is preferably 40 DEG C.
