Abstract
343,225. Variable-speed gearing. HALL, H. R., Fair View, Eldwick, Bingley, Yorkshire. Dec. 9, 1929, No. 37679. [Class 80 (ii).] Friction gearing of the type employing two coned friction rollers has the rollers coupled by an idler wheel between them and a rigid annular member surrounding them. The rollers a, bare mounted on parallel axes and are pressed towards thrust bearings at their smaller ends by adjustable or non-adjustable springs c housed in recesses at their larger ends. The idler wheel g has an arcuate contacting surface and is carried by a spindle g<1> mounted in a transverse frame g<2> slidably mounted in a carrier k. The annular member j which has an arcuate internal surface is held in position in the same plane as the idler g by rollers n on the carrier k. The carrier k is slidably mounted on guideways in the casing and is traversed by screwed spindles o engaging nuts o<1> mounted between lugs k<2> on the carrier. The spindles o are geared together so as to be actuated simultaneously by a single hand-wheel p. The idler may be guided and the annular arranged to float.
