Feedwater, supplying. - In a supply plant containing a hotwater storage reservoir 5, a separating chamber 12 is arranged between the storage reservoir and the feed pump 13 and above the feed pomp to prevent the generation of steam in the feed pipe line. Gases and vapour are discharged from the chamber 12 through nozzles 17, Fig. 1, under the control of a valve 18, which opens when a certain pressure is exceeded in the chamber, and the discharged gases and vapour serve to heat the incoming feed in a heater 15. A float-operated valve 19 maintains a constant water level in the chamber. A valve 8 in the water supply pipe 11 is controlled by the pressure in the steam supply pipe 9. The pump 7, Fig. 2, discharges the feed water into the upper part of the storage reservoir through a distributor 20 to condense surplus steam. The separating, chamber, in this modification, is arranged well above the storage reservoir and the gas discharge pipe 16 is fitted with a valve 21 so operated by a float 12 in the chamber that the valve is closed when the water level in the chamber rises. In a further modification, valves in the water supply and gas discharge pipes of the separating chamber are operated by diaphragms acted upon on one side by the vapour pressure in the chamber and on the other side by the saturation pressure of the steam given off from the feedwater in a separate receptacle in order to maintain a definite pressure drop between the storage vessel and the separating chamber.
