545,206. Feedwater heating and supply systems. RITCHIE, E. G. Jan. 17, 1941, No. 638. [Classes 64 (i) and 123 (ii)] A steam generating plant comprises a steaming economizer 7 and a hot water chamber 11 for storing water from the economizer in excess of that corresponding to the steam demand when the steam demand is low, and for supplying stored water to the economizer and boiler at saturation-temperature when the steam demand is high, the supply from the hot well 5 being then reduced or cut off. A valve 8 in the feed pipe 9 from the hot well is so controlled by the pressure in the steam main 2 that when the steam pressure falls due to increased demand, the valve closes, and when the steam pressure rises due to decreased demand, the valve opens. The valve is also operated by high and low water regulators 24, 25 in the storage chamber. An auxiliary pump 15 supplies storage water to the boiler through a water-level regulator 18 and to the economizer through a valve 20 opened when the water level in the drum 10 of the economizer falls. Steam is supplied to the consumer 3 through a reducing valve 26. Steam may be discharged from the economizer directly into a boiler steam drum, the storage chamber being charged by overflow from a boiler steam drum instead of from an economizer drum. Water storage may be provided by enlarging the boiler steam drums. In a further modification, the hot well water normally passes through an interstage heater in sufficient quantity to maintain a constant level in the storage chamber, and during periods of low steam demand the water flows through a bye-pass around the heater into the economizer in increased quantity to absorb the surplus heat of the boiler furnace.
