Abstract

1,155,291. Raising steam in forced flow boilers; heating feedwater; controlling superheat temperatures. DURRWERKE A.G. 19 Sept., 1966 [18 Sept., 1965], No. 41796/66. Heading F4A. A once through forced flow boiler comprises a preheater 5, an evaporator 6, and first and second superheaters 7, 9 connected in series. Steam from the outlet of superheater 9 passes through turbines 10, 12 and an intermediate reheater 11 on its way to a condenser 13 from where the condensed steam passes back to a storage tank 1. A feed pump 2 then supplies water from a tank 1 through control valve 3 and a control preheater 4 comprising a bank of U-tubes 25 in a cylindrical drum, to the preheater 5. On start up and during low load operation, valve 8 between superheaters 7 and 9 is closed, so that fluid from superheater 7 passes to a separator 16. Steam from the separator 16 passes to the superheater 9 whilst water drains through line 16a to drum 4 to preheat the boiler feedwater in tubes 25. Water from drum 4 is returned to tank 1 through a line containing valve 17 which is regulated in dependence upon the water level in the drum 4, the water temperature in the tank 1 and the steam temperature leaving superheater 9, to maintain a suitable water level. An overflow line from drum 4 is also provided. As start up proceeds, some steam is passed through line 16a from separator 16 to drum 4 to heat the feed water in tubes 25 which then act as a condenser. Variation of water level in drum 4 controls the proportion of steam so returned, and thus the amount of steam passed through superheater 9, and so can control the steam outlet temperature at point 20. In a modification (not shown), the water level control may be effected in a separate vessel arranged downstream of the preheating drum.
