Mounting spare wheels on vehicles.-Apparatus for securing the hub a of a spare wheel to a member, such as a pedestal c', fixed to the vehicle comprises a diaphragm c<2> having an elongated slot c<4> therein, a bolt d with an elongated head d<1> adapted in one angular position to pass through the slot c<4> and in another to be incapable of withdrawal therefrom, and a flanged member e axially slidable on the bolt and adapted directly or indirectly to press against the end of the hub a under the action of a nut i; and is characterized in that the bolt d, the slidable member e, and the nut i are adapted to be withdrawn and replaced as a unit, thus preventing the several parts from being mislaid. In the operative position, accidental rotation of the bolt is prevented by the engagement with the slot c<4> of projecting tongues f<1> on a squaresectioned sleeve f, which is slidable on a squared part d<2> of the bolt and is rigidly connected by a tube g to the flanged member e. When the nut i is unscrewed, the tongues f<1> are withdrawn from the slot by the action of a spring h<1>, thus enabiing the bolt d to be turned by means of the member e until its head d<1> can be withdrawn through the slot c<4>. An arrow mark indicates the angular position of the member e and the bolt. The flanged member e may engage a ring carried by a bracket j adapted to be swung about a pivot on the vehicle frame into a position to engage the hub; or the bolt and its associated parts may be permanently carried by the swing- ing bracket j.
