Abstract

364,339. Spare-wheel holders. MARSHALL, J., 42, Llanmaes Street, Cardiff. Jan. 6, 1931, No. 514. [Class 136 (i).] A sparewheel carrier comprises a frame arranged horizontally below the chassis at the rear or side of the vehicle, such frame having an inner transverse part pivoted at its ends, so that the outerend of the frame, which is detachably connected to the vehicle, may be disconnected and the frame lowered to produce an inclined surface from which the spare wheel can be readily removed. As shown in rear elevation in Fig. 1 and side elevation in Fig. 2, the frame comprises a transverse member 8 and two longitudinal members 9, the ends of the member 8 being pivoted at 7 to brackets 5 bolted to longitudinal members 4 of the chassis. Between the rear ends of the members 9 is pivoted an arm 11, the upper end 11a of which is bent and apertured to receive a bolt 12a pivoted to a lug 14 on a transverse chassis member 16, whereby the frame 8, 9 is secured in the horizontal position and the spare wheel 1 pressed. against a transverse bar 2 secured to the chassis. The wheel 1 may be centred by a ring 20 engaging its hub. On disconnecting the upper end of the arm 11, the frame 8, 9 may be lowered about its pivots 7 into an inclined position, the arm 11 being turned down to form a supporting-leg. The bolt 12a may be replaced by a padlock or other fastening to prevent theft, or a padlock &c. may be fitted to the pivoted frame 8, 9. Means for fastening the wheel to the ring 20 &c. may be provided.
