T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALLAN H. HAsoA L, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Jacks for the Side Cars of Motor Cycles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, toimprovements in lifting jacks for vehicles; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel jack for use in connection with the side-car of a motorcycle, with a view of thejack with the axle of the side car for raising its wheel when it is desired to remove ,or replace a tire.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply constructed, as well as an efliciently operating jack for the side-car of a motorcycle, the jack being permanently carried by the axle of the side-car, by being pivotally connected with the axle, the jack being adapted to be lowered so as to be brought into a substantially vertical supporting relation with the road-surface when the wheel is to be raised, and the axle being provided with a clamping means with which the jack can be swung into holding engagement when not desired, and so as not to interfere with the use of the motor-cycle and its sidecar.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present in vention.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel lifting jack for the side-car of a motor-cycle hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the said invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combination of the several devices and parts, described more in detail in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims directly connecting which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is clearly 'llustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 1- Figure 1 is a rear-end view of one type of motorcycle and side-car, showing in con nection with the axle of the side-car and its wheel, a jack pivotally connected with the axle, said jack being swung in its parallel relation with the axle and in holding engagement with a clamping means with which the axle is provided.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said. above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates, in a general manner, a motor-cycle of any known construction, and 2 indicates the usual side-car thereof. The reterenCephai-acter 3 indicates the usual axle of the side-car, 4; the wheel at one end of the said axle, and 5 denotes any usual and wellknown mechanism for oscillatorily connecting the other endof the axle 3 to the framework of the motor-cycle. Suitably mounted upon said axle 3, near the wheel a, is a sleeve-like member or collar 6 which is provided with a pair of downwardly extending members 7 carrying near their lower endportions, a pintle 8. Pivotally mounted upon the said pintle 8 and between the said downwardly extending members 7 of the collar 6 is the reduced and perforated end-portion 10 of a suitably-formed rod or post 9, these several parts providing the jack, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings.
Suitably connected with the said axle 3 and located in the proper position thereon with relation to the sleeve-like member or collar 6 is a clamping means with which the said rod. or post 9 can be brought into detachable holding engagement, in the man ner illustrated in said Figures 1. and 4; of the drawings.
One form of such clamping device as here shown consists, essentially, of a pair of members 11 and 12 having perforated ears or lugs 13 and 14-, at their opposite edges, said ears being in registration with each other, and being connected by a pin 15 upon which is suitably mounted the usual coilspring 16.
Extending from the respective members 11 and 12 are the usual convexly shaped clamping or holding elements 17 and 18, which shown are adapted to embrace the axle and are securely held in their embracing relation with he axle by the action of the said coiled spring 16 and its respective ends against the inner faces of the peculiarly shaped rod or post-receiving elements 19 and 20 which are also connected with the members 11 and 12, and extend in downward directions from said members, as clearly shown in Figures 1, 2 and fl: of the drawings.
Having in the foregoing set forth the general arrangements and constructions of the several devices, any further description of their operations for raising the wheel of the side-car, as shown in F gure 2 of the drawings, or swinging the jack into its retained engagement with the clamping device mounted upon the axle 3 are deemed unnecessary, as all of this will be clearly understood from an inspection of said figures of the drawings.
I am aware, however, that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the detailsof the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invening from said tion as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit myself to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. In a side-car for motor-cycles, an axle and its wheels, a sleeve-like member mounted upon said axle, perforated lugs extendmember, a nintle carried by jack-rod pivotally connected with said pintle, and means consisting of a pair of pivot-ally connected and spring controlled members, said members being formed at one end with convexly shaped axle-embracing elements for mounting said means in a fixed position upon said axle, and said members being formed at their opposite ends with rod-receiving and clamping elements with which said jack-rod is adapted to be brought into detachable holding on ga gement.
2. in a side-car for a motor-cycle, an axle and its wheels, a sleeve-like member mounted upon said axle, perforated lugs extending from said member, a pintle carried by said lugs, a jack-rod pivotally connected with said pintle, and a clamping device mounted upon said axle and comprising a pair of spring-controlled clamping members benveen which said jack-rod is adapted to be brought into detachable holding engagement.
