Abstract

421,306. Locking vehicle wheels. ROSENGARTEN, A., 28, Jesenskeho, Mahrisch- Ostrau, Czecho-Slovakia. March 3, 1934, No. 6870. [Class 79 (iii)] To prevent unauthorized use, the hub 18 of a bicycle or other vehicle wheel is adapted to be locked to its fixed axle 19 by a slidable collar 17 having polygonal or other non-circular relation with the axle to prevent rotation thereon and also formed with a non-circular periphery for engagement with a correspondingly formed opening 30 in the co-operating hub part 28. The collar is mounted on an extension 33 of the usual fixed bearing cone 31 and carries a pin 37 passing through slots 42 in the extension and axle, serving not to prevent rotation but to take the thrust of a spring 39 housed in an axial bore and which tends to force the collar into the opening in the hub closure cap 28. The action is opposed by a slidable pin 36 controlled by a rotary barrel lock 43 threaded on the axle end. The rotary barrel 44, Fig. 6, acts upon the pin 36 by means of a cam-shaped end with a stop face 46 and is locked in either of two positions separated by an angle of 90‹, two sets of retaining plungers being provided for this purpose. The bearing cone 31, which is screwed on the axle 19, is locked by a nut 64 and washer 65, a reduced non-circular part 58 of the extension 33 carrying a dust-cap 59 and being engaged by an arm 61 bolted to a sleeve on the adjacent fork arm of the cycle frame. The lock 43 is formed with an internally threaded extension 43<a> for attachment to the end of the axle 19, a polygonal shoulder 47 on the extension engaging a corresponding aperture in a yoke 49 which is also apertured to permit passage of the shank 53 of the usual eyebolt for adjusting the chain tension. When assembled, the yoke 49 straddles the eyebolt and mudguard stay 54 and lies in the bifurcated end of the frame member 50, the parts being clamped by a nut 51. The lock 43, which is provided with a dust-cap 55 and may serve as a footstep, thus cannot be removed without dismounting the wheel.
