Signs; name and mumber plates; line screen devices. -A sign comprises a transparent stencil plate 3 having a ribbed or like surface, through which light admitted by a transparent multicoloured plate 6 is directed by a reflector 4. The plate 6 is preferably marked with oblique coloured stripes or may be formed of separate coloured strips, which in conjunction with the ribs on the stencil 3 produce a changing effect as an observer passes the sign. This effect may be enhanced by the provision of similar ribs, slanting in a different direction, upon the reflector 4, which may be formed of metal, mirrored glass or a plurality of silvered glass tubes. The sign is preferably constructed in the triangular form shown, the plates 3 and 6 being detachably mounted in channels 12. End reflectors 11, ribbed or otherwise, may also be provided, and the stencil 3, which may be painted direct on ribbed glass or celluloid, or may be in the form of a cut-out backed by such material, is preferably shielded from direct illumination by the provision of a hood 8.
