[Class 3 (ii).] A sign wherein a translucent letter or the like is arranged on a rear-illuminated plate so that as viewed from the front the central portion of the letter is illuminated with greatest intensity, the intensity decreasing towards the periphery of the letter, is characterised in that a translucent medium having a similar shape to the letter but of smaller dimensions is arranged in spaced relation to the letter between the source of light and the letter so that the edges of the letter overlap the edges of the translucent medium and a relief effect is given to the letter. As shown in Fig. 4, the sign comprises a glass plate 1 on which the letter is painted in the form of a coating 7 covered by a translucent and reflecting coating 8, and a plate 2 provided with a gold or silver coating 9 of the same shape as the letter. A portion 10 of the plate 2 lying symmetrically behind the letter is not covered with this coating but with a diffusing coating 12. The coating 9 and the remainder of the back of the plate 2 except the portion 10 are then covered with a coating 11 of black paint. In a modification, Fig. 5, a plate 13 is interposed between the plates 1, 2 and provided with a black coating 11 covered with a light green coating 14. A yellow coating 15 may also be provided on the plate 13. The translucency of the portion 10 may be uniform or decrease from the centre towards the edges by varying the thickness of either the coating 12 or the plate 2, the plate in the latter case being made of frosted or like diffusing glass. The coatings may be arranged in recesses in the plates. The sign may be mounted in a casing which is illuminated by a lamp and which may be provided with a mirror for reflecting sunlight on to the sign. The casing may also be provided with one or more reflecting surfaces by covering its inner wall with a coating of paint which may be mixed with splintered glass.
