Abstract
331,484. Klopp, F. Feb. 25, 1929. Hardening.-In a machine for hardening the bearing parts of shafts, the shafts f are supported in slots e in two discs d mounted on an axle c mounted in bearings in the walls of a tank a. Before the shafts f are inserted in the bearings e a spur wheel g is keyed on each shaft and meshes with a spur wheel h loosely mounted in a bush i slidably mounted on the axle c. A spur wheel k slidably mounted on a driven shaft l meshes with the wheel h. The axle c is rotated periodically by the engagement with a ratchet s thereon of a detent r pivoted on end of a rod p, which is moved up and down by an eccentric n mounted in an axle m. In operation the shafts f are rotated in their bearings, are periodically moved by the axle c, and are brought between rows of autogenous burners t, u so that the bearing parts of the shafts are heated. At the next movement of the axle c, the shaft f drops into the quenching tank, a bridge piece v keeping the shaft in its bearings until it is well past the burners.
