Abstract
330,952. Taylor, R. C. Feb. 18, 1929. Segmental paving; foundations.-A road surface is supported on a lower course consisting of thin metal plates 3, 4, Fig. 1, preferably of rolled steel, secured to longitudinal beams 1 embedded in the road foundation. The plates 3 may extend across the whole of the beam elements or may be arranged in transverse sections 4, and adjacent plates may be interlocked by bevelled tongues 7. The ends of the plates may be carried into the foundation, as at 9, Fig. 1, and 19, Fig. 6, or may be engaged with the flanges of the beam elements, as shown in Fig. 4. Reinforced concrete beams 25 are shown in Fig. 9. Concrete strata 35, 36 may be provided below and above the metal plates 30 as shown in Fig. 16, and in this case the longitudinal beams 31 may extend into a. substructure of earth or broken stone.
