Abstract

549,252. Roads. SMITH, W. A., HOMER, W. E., and JENNINGS, H. July 2, 1941, No. 8352. [Class 107] Runways for aeroplanes, gantries, suspended roadways and the like comprise pre-cast concrete piers 1 mounted on footings 2 cast in situ and carrying pre-cast concrete beams 8 preferably arranged in grooves 7, pre-cast concrete slabs 13 being laid upon the beams. The pier reinforcement may comprise four vertical bars 3 tied with wire and having hooked lower ends 4 which project into holes in the footings and are grouted therein. The beam reinforcement may comprise four bars 9 tied with wire and the lower bars may be cranked upwardly and bent back at an incline. Grouted &c. rag or anchor bolts 11 secure the beams to the piers and the slabs are similarly secured to the beams. The slabs are interlocked preferably by angular ribs and grooves 15. Slots 16 provide for drainage and have enlarged upper ends. The joints between the slabs, and between the beams and piers have resilient filling material such as mastic. Longer piers may be supported by pre-cast reinforced struts fitting in mortices in the heads of the piers and having their lower ends fitted into double shoes bedded in the ground.
