Abstract

945,999. Roads. J. L. JENSON. July 24, 1961 [July 27, 1960], No. 26680/61. Heading EIG. A road comprises preformed concrete slabs mounted on supports which are clear of the ground and which rest on rows of precast piles, also of concrete, which are anchored without the use of foundation beds in naturally solid and frost free strata i.e. in Great Britain more than 2 feet deep. As shown, concrete piles 1, anchored at least three feet deep, support reinforced concrete beams 2 on which are laid concrete or reinforced concrete slabs 3. The piles 1 may be preformed or formed in situ. At each side of a roadway a concrete beam 4 supported on piles 5 retains the slabs 3 against lateral displacement. Each slab comprises reduced edge portions which rest on the beams 2, shoulders 3a which engage the sides of the beams and ribs 9 on its underside radiating from an inverted dome 10. An electric heating element may be built into or located immediately below a surface coating of waterproof substance on the slab and is connected to cables 11 mounted on the beam 4. Drainage channels 13 are formed in the beam 4. Road markings may be incorporated in the slabs during manufacture.
