Abstract

774,546. Prestressed roads &c. STRESSED CONCRETE DESIGN, Ltd. July 4, 1955 [July 7, 1954], No. 19929/54. Class 107 A prestressed road, runway &c. comprises slabs laid side by side on a plurality of beams spaced to carry the slabs so that the latter do not engage the sub-soil or blinding course, tension wires being passed through ducts in the slabs. By this means stressing is facilitated due to the low frictional drag on the slabs, and the beams can be lubricated e.g. with bitumen to further facilitate movement during prestressing. The beams 10 may be cast in situ and the slabs 1 arranged thereon leaving spaces 11 which are filled with cement before prestressing. Ducts 2 and 24 provide for tensioning wires at right angles. The space between the underside of the slabs and the foundation may be filled with grout through holes left for the purpose in the slabs. The prestressing wires are terminated in thicker slabs, on the one side (Fig: 5) by a rod 16 and helix 17 which is tensioned and then concreted in, and on the other side (Fig. 4) by conventional means 7 which may be concreted or merely covered by slabs. A passage 25 is provided to fill the ducts with grout. Wedges are used when filling in the spaces 11 with concrete to prevent access of this concrete to the ducts.
